First American Dies in Vietnam: Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey
Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey who was the head of the American OSS was killed in Vietnam while driving to the airport. Later it was reported that his death was a result of a misunderstanding of identity as he was mistaken for a Frenchman. -
Vietnam Recognized as Democratic Republic

Geneva Accords Created and Signed
The Geneva Accords were established to cause a cease-fire in Laos and Cambodia. This also established that a general election in 2 years would occur to help bring together North and South Vietnam. It established that Vietnam was separated as a Southern zone ruled by the State of Vietnam and the Northern zone ruled by Viet Minh. -
Southeast Asia Treaty Organization is Created
The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization was created with members with Australia, United States, Great Britain, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand. SEATO was created with a goal to monitor Communist expansion in Southeast Asia. -
Ngo Dinh Diem becomes President
Ngo Dinh Diem is elected Chief of State and first President of the Republic of Vietnam. This transformed Vietnam from communism to dictatorship. This elected was considered to be fraudulent. -
US Servicemen killed in Guerilla Attack
Major Dale R. Buis and Master Sargeant Chester M. Ovnand were the first Americans to die in the Vietnam war due to a guerrilla attack on Bienhoa. 6 Vietnamese attacked the residential compound. -
US deploys use of Agent Orange
A herbicide was used in defense in Vietnam. The US government deploys nearly 20 million gallons across South Vietna, President Kennedy came to office in 1961 used this to "prevent communist domination of South Vietnam; to create a viable and increasingly democratic society, and to initiate, on an accelerated basis, a series of mutually supporting actions of a military, political, economic, psychological, and covert character to achieve this objective." -
President Ngo Dihn Diem Murdered
The Army of the Republic of Vietnam overthrew the new President and assassinated him and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu. These assassinations were supported by the US. -
Gulf of Tonkin Attack
Vietnamese ships fired torpedoes at USS Maddox stationed at the Gulf of Tonkin. The USS Maddox returns fire and sinks all 3 Vietnamese vessels. -
US Military Involvement Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
President Johnson creates the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution stating that the US military will be involved in Vietnam if necessary. It authorizes the President to use "necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States". -
First US Marines Deployed
The first 2 battalions were deployed in Da Nang Vietnam. One was deployed by sea and the other by air to defend the US. -
First US Combat Unit Deployed to Vietna,
The first Army combat ( 173d Airborne Brigade) unit was deployed to Bien Hoa airbase in Vietnam. -
Cedar Falls
14,000 South Vietnamese and 16,000 US troops are deployed to the Iron Triangle near Saigon to destroy Vietcong operations. -
Bombing in Cambodia- Operation Menu
The US bombs North Vietnamese forces aiming to reduce the numbers of North Vietnamese troops entering the South. -
Signing of Paris Peace Accords
Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Viet Cong, Republic of Vietnam and the United states sign the Paris Peace Accords. This ended the war in Vietnam and US troops were withdrawn.
