French loses final land in Vietnam
This was the start of the U.S. being more involved in Vietnam. Because France was an ally, the U.S. helped them in their pursuits. When the French lost their final ground in Vietnam, it became largely a U.S. effort. -
Vietnam Splits
Vietnam splits into Northa and South after the signing of the Geneva Accords. North Vietnam becomes a communist territory and South Vietnam became an anti-communist state. -
Ho Chi Minh Trail
Group 559 was a transportation unit that took goods along the Cambodia/Vietnam border to Vietcong in South Vietnam. The trail later became known as the Ho Chi MinhTrail.

JFK Orders More Troops
JFK sent 3,000 troops over to South Vietnam in an attempt to help them hold off the Vietcong, as well as more new equipment.

Operation Ranc Hand
Operation Ranch Hand was a U.S. plan of attack that sprayed harmful chemicals over crops in South Vietnam as an attempt to depleat the food source of the Vietcong. There were multple different chemical combinations used all with the name Agent and then a color. -
Golf of Tonkin Resolution
The Golf of Tonkin Resolution essentailly gave President Johnson the ability to take whatever measures he saw necessary to achieve and maintain international peace in southeast Asia. -
Johnson Sends More Troops
The U.S. makes an attempt at peace with North Vietnam, but they refuse. President Johnson ups the amount of troops in South Vietnam to 60,000 troops. Korea and Austrailia also show international support. -
Operation Starlite
This was the first battle of purely U.S. military in the Vietnam war. It was planned based on the information of a general of South Vietnam that was stationed in North Vietnam to protect the Chu Lai Air Base. -
Operation Junction City
In the one of the largest U.S. airborn attacks, the goal was to get the Vietcong out of their headquarters and into waiting lines of troops. The operaion was successful in that the U.S. was able to gain an abundance of weapons and equipment. -
Attack on Cambodia
South Vietnamese troups head into Cambodia in an attempt to reach Vietcong bases. Soon after, American troops join them and they successfully uncover jungle stores of the North Vietnamese and obtain a large amount of weaponary. -
The Beginning of Retreating
On March 30th, Northern Vietnamese troops start a massive attack on the South Vietnamese, causing chaos on the defensive end and a massive retreat backwards. After this offensive by the Vietcong, there was a trend of retreating farther and farther back during the next few battles. -
American Troops Leave
Sometime in March of 1973, the last of the U.S. troops that were in Vietnam retrun home. Some military advisors are left behind, as well as a few marine troops to protect U.S. established bases, but the war is officially considered over. -
Last U.S. Death's in War
Two marines were killed in an early morning attack at an airport in Saigon. After that, any U.S. personal in Vietnam left the embassy only hours before the place was ransacked by the Vietcong. They took Saigon and officially ended the war. -
Communist Country
On July 2, 1976, Vietnam is officially united again as a single communist country. -
Vietnam Memorial
The Vietnam memorial was opened and dedicated on this day as a remmbrance of the lives lost during the war.
