President Ngo Dinh
South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem begins campaign against political dissidents. -
Beginning of Communist insurgency in the South.
After requiring help from the Soviets Ho Chi Minh becomes a communist which was the beginning of Communist insurgency in the South. -
It begins
Weapons and men from North Vietnam begin infiltrating the South. -
American aid to Diem increased.
Diem was loosing the battle so America sent more aid to help. -
President Kennedy sends even more help.
President John F. Kennedy orders more help for the South Vietnamese government in its war against the Vietcong guerrillas. U.S. backing includes new equipment and more than 3,000 military advisors and support personnel. -
President Diem is killed
Viet Cong, the communist guerrillas operating in South Vietnam, defeat units of the ARVN, the South Vietnamese Army.
President Diem is overthrown and then killed in a US-backed military coup. -
Tonkin incident
the US says North Vietnamese patrol boats fire on two US Navy destroyers. US Congress approves Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, authorizing military action in region. -
President Johnson orders attack
A U.S. helicopter base and advisory compound in the central highlands of South Vietnam is attacked by NLF commandos. Nine Americans are killed and more than 70 are wounded. President Johnson immediately orders U.S. Navy fighter-bombers to attack military targets just inside North Vietnam. -
Arival of troops
200,000 American combat troops arrive in South Vietnam. -
Increasing numbers
US troop numbers in Vietnam rise to 400,000, then to 500,000 the following year. -
Death of Ho Chi Minh
Ho Chi Minh dies. President Nixon begins to reduce US ground troops in Vietnam as domestic public opposition to the war grows. -
Possible peace?
All warring parties in the Vietnam War sign a cease fire. Ceasefire agreement in Paris, US troop pull-out completed by March. -
Ford Concedes
President Ford says war is finished and decides to not further any actions in the Vietnam. -
Van Minh surrenders
North Vietnamese troops invade South Vietnam and take control of the whole country after South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh surrenders.
