Battle of Dien Bien Phu
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu is when France was kicked out of Vietnam leading to the split of the country. There was the North controlled by the Viet Minh or NVA and the south controlled by the South Vietnamese army. -
NLF Created
The National Liberation Front (NLF) is formed to destroy the Diem regime. Their military wing the Viet Cong (VC). The group will be funded by the North Vietnamese government. -
First American Death
The first US member dies in combat. This marks the beginning of the war for the Americans. -
Protests begin in South Vietnam
The police decide to fire bullets into large crowds of buddhists monks. The protests went on for a long time. 3 people set themselves on fire in the middle of the street to show the South Vietnamese Government that they were not happy. -
Rollng Thunder Attacks
The U.S. implements operation Rolling Thunder which was the deployment of troops in Vietnam and the continuation of bombing efforts. -
First Vietnamese Bombing
First North Vietnam bombing happened from North Vietnamese gunboats being bombed by the U.S after president Lyndon Johnson ordered retaliatory. -
N. Vietnam launches Tet Offensive
The North Vietnamese launched the Tet offensive which catches the United States off guard and take several key cities. But within a few days the U.S. takes the cities back. -
South Vietnamese Loss
In a huge loss to the south vietnamese the NVA take the city of Phuoc Long and the surrounding province. The attack is a huge violation in the peace agreement but the US doesn’t retaliate.
