The total battle took 55 days and 3,000 French troops were killed and another 8,000 were injured. Vietnamese victory shattered France's resolve to carry on the war. Even thought the Vietnemese suffered much greater losses. -

Operation Chopper
In Operation Chopper, helicopters flown by the Army's ferry and 1,000 South Vietnamese soldiers to sweep a NLF stronghold near Saigon. It marked America's first mission against the Vietcong. There was only 6 total fatalities in this operation. -
Vietcong Stand Ground
At the village of Ap Bac, the Vietcong 514th Battalion and local guerrilla forces attack the South Vietnamese Army's. For the first time, the Vietcong stand their ground against Americans and South Vietnamese. About 400 Veitnamese were killed and 3 Americans. -
Ngo Dinh Diem Dies
Ngo Dinh Diem was the President of the Republic of Vietnam. He and his brother were both killed by Nguyễn Văn Nhung who was under the orders of Dương Văn Minh. They were on en route to the Vietnamese Joint General Staff headquarters. -
U.S.S. Maddox reports being fired on.
The Captain reports being fired on. After the accindent the Captain sayes that he was never being fired on. Six hours after the call U. S. jets bomb two naval bases and in the prosess two jets are downed. -
Vietcong mortars rain Bien Hoa Air Base
Two days before the presidential election, Vietcong bombed an ally air base. The result was 4 killed and 76 wounded. There were 5 B-57's that were destroyed and another 15 damaged. This all happened near Saigon.
