First Treaty of Saigon
Treaty signed between representatives of teh French EMpire and he last precolonial emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. The emperor ceded Saigon, the island of Poulo Condor and three southern provices of what was to become known as Cochinchina to the French. -
Second Treaty of Saigon
It reiterated hte stipulations of the previous aggreement. Vietnam recognized the full sovereignty of France over the three provicnes captured, the Red River was opened for trade as well as the ports of the three sotuern provinces that the French had gotten. Vietnam looked to China for help and in return both France and China claimed the soverignty over Vietnamese territoy of Hanoi. -
Occupation of Hanoi
The first vicilian governmor of Cochin CHina, deemed the Second Treaty of Saigon of 1874 unfulfilled, thus leading to the occupation of Hanoi on April of 1882. -
Treaty of Hue
Between France and Vietnam, and it recognised a French protectorate over Annam and Tonkin. THe treaty gave the French everything it wanted from Vietnam. THe vietnamese recognised the legitimacy of teh French occupation of Cochinchina, they accepted a French protectorate both for Annam and Tonkin and promised to withdraw their troops from Tonkin. Treaty was never ratified in France and was replaced on June 6th 1884 by the "Treaty of Protectorate" which formed the basis for French rule in Vietnam. -
Can VuongCan Vuong (Loyalty to the King) movement was formed
It was a lerge-scale Vietnames insurgency against the French Colonial rule. They wanted to get rid of the French and replace it with the boy emperor Ham Nghi as the leader of a newly independent Vietnam. The movement was not successful because it lacked a coherent national sturycture and consisted mainly of regional leaders who attacked French troops in their own province. -
Ho Chi Minh was born
This is important because he becomes one of Vietnamese communist revolutionary leaders who also becomes prime minister/president in 1945. He plays an important role in the establishing the Democratic Repblic of Vietnam and the Peope's Army of Vietnam. -
Phan Dinh Phung Dies
Phan Dinh Phung was a revolutionary who led rebel armies agianst the French colonial forces in Vietnam, and was one of te msot prominent of the COnfucian court scholars involved in anti-French military campaigns. He was cited a national hero after his death by 20th century nationalist. His dedication to the cause and refusal to surrender helped him become a naitonal hero. -
Phat Diem Cathedral
Is located in Kim Son District and the architecture is a cross between Vietnam and Europe. It was build during the colonial rule and took 24 years to complete. Druing the colonial rule era, many Vietnamese converted to catholisism. -
Cao Dai
It was very successful and was founded by an official lin teh French service with deep interest in spiritualislm and seanace. Showed that many int eh south were ready to embrace a new religion. Cao Dai, literally "high latform" got its name from Dowism, it fosteres confucian morals and endorsed roman catholic church... -
Communist Pary of Indochina
One of the three communist groups which formed the base of the Vietnamese COmmunist Party. Formally known as the Revolutionary Party of the New Vietnam. The headquarters of the Thanh Nein organization was forced underground by Chinese Nationalist which lead to a split within the Thanh Nein. More than 20 delegates from cells throughout the Tonkin region held a conference in Hanoi, where they declared the dissolution of Thanh Nein and established the Communist Pary of Indochina. -
May Day Demonstrations
Poor harvest in 1929 and 1930 radicalized many peasants and led to demonstrations organized by teh ICP activists. Demonstrations gained critical mass as families of the semi-peasant workers joined the demosntrations to express their dissatisfaction with the economic circumstances. French colonial authorities moved in to quash what they saw as dangerous peasant revolts. Governmnet forces fired upon the assembled crowds, killing dozens of the peasant sna inflaming the population. As a result ... -

As a response, local councils were organized in villages in an effor to govern themselves locally. However, repression by the colonial authorities began in teh fall of 1931, leading to many deaths, imprisonment and deportation. ICP authorities hunted down and wiped out in the region. . -
