Battle of Dien Bien Phu
The decisive engagement in the first Indochina war. It consisted of a struggle between French and Viet Minh forces for control of a small mountain on the Vietnamese border near Laos. The war consisted of around 4,000 casualties and more then 800 soldiers gone missing. -
The 1954 Geneva Accords divide VIetnam
In July of 1954, The Geneva agreements were signed. As part of the agreement. The French agreed to withdraw their troops from Northern Vietnam. Vietnam would be temporarily divided at the 17th parallel, Which left pending elections within two years to choose a president and reunite the Country once again. -
The overthrow of Ngo Dinh Diem
By September of 1963, many Vietnamese considered the overthrow of Diem more important that the defeat of the Communists. On November 1st, the Diem regime was toppled by a military coup. Diem and his brother both were eventually assasinated even though the United States knew about the coup that was becoming more popular and gaining attention. -
Golf of Tonkin incident
The golf of Tonkin incident occurred August of 1964, North Vietnamese warships purportedly attacked United States warships. President Lyndon Johnson claimed that the United States did nothing to provoke these two attacks and that North Vietnam was the aggressor
