Geneva Accords signed
The accords were designed to restore pece in Vietnam, but actually ended up contributing to the problem. Diplomats from over 100 countries met in Geneva, Switzerland. THe meeting discussion wassupposed to be about Cold War "hot spots", but ended up being about the Vietminh due to the huge problem. Vietminh defeat the French

Kennedy Takes Over Office
Kennedy won by a small margin to Richard Nixon is this election, after losing the previous election. Kennedy brought new things to the country and was highly looked up to. He lsaved the country from nuclear war with Russia and CUba, and did went President in stressful times. Protest to the Vietnamese government
Some of the protests againtst the South Vietnamese government were known as the Buddhist crisis because so many of the protests were lead by Buddhist monks. Overthrow of Diem
Diem was the first president of South Vietnam, partially assigned by the U.S. Once Diem was in office, he started going against the rules and wishes of the U.S. He started arresting his election opponents and making it so that the country had no other options for leaders. Congress passes Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The resolution gave nearly unlimited power to Lyndon Johnson in doing whatever he wanted to "stop communism" in Southeast Asia. U.S. combat troops arrive in Vietnam
The U.S. Marine Hawk Air defense was the first of U.S. toops to be sent to De Nang, South Vietnam in order to protect our air base there. Operation Rolling Thunder

March on the Pentagon takes place
100,000 people including black nationalists, radicals, liberals, hippies, and professors started protesting ouside of the Pentagon to go against the war. The violence started when one marcher called JOhnson "the enemy" due to his support for the war. Tet Offensive
Tet is the Lunar New Year Holiday in Vietnam. On this specific Tet, 70,000 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers went though with a series of attacks on more than 100 South Vietnam cities. Soviets repress Czechoslovakia’s rebellion

Vietnamization

Kent State
As students protested the war outside of their school, the National Gard was called in in order to stop the riot. The National Guard ended up killing four students and injuring nine due to shooting without orders. 26th Amendment
The right to vote was restricted to 21, until after the Vietnam war when men were being drafted that couldn't even vote. After a court case in Oregon, the 26th Amendment was brought up and passed.

Evacuation of last Americans from Vietnam

South Vietnam Surrender
