Ho Chi Minh returns to Vietnam
Returns to Vietnam after fleeing Indochina and apending several years in exile in the Soviet Union and China -
Japan Surrenders
Japan surrenders control over Indochina after the Allies' victory over them -
French Troops Return to Vietnam
French troops return and force Vietminh forces into hiding in the countryside -
Britain gives in
Britain decides to give India their independence -
Eisenhower takes office
(Exact date is unknown) Eisenhower continued to support the French military campaign against the Vietminh after taking office. -
Domino Theory
(Exact date of establishment is unsure) United States was paying roughly three-fourths of France's war costs. Domino Theory--> the belief that if Vietnam fell to ommunism, so too would the other nations of Southeast Asia. -
France is defeated
The French force at Dien Bien Phu fell to the Vietminh The defeat convinced the French to make preace and withdraw from Indochina. -
Geneva Accords (Conference)
Divided Vietnam along the 17th parallel, with Ho Chi Minh and the Vietminh in control of North Vietnam and a pro-Western Regime in control of the South. Exact date of beginning of Geneva Accords is uncertain, but it took place during the year of 1956 -
Buddhist Monks
Diem, a Catholic, banned the raditional religious flaga for Buddha's birthday. Buddhists went to the streets in an outrage, 9 were killed, and 14 were injured. A Buddhist monk went to the streets and simply set himself on fire--> stark symbol of the oppositing to Diem. -
Henry Cabot Lodge
Lodge arrives in Vietnam and was shocked at how unpopular Diem had become. -
American Troops seize power
Diem was executed shortly afterwards -
Tonkin Resolution
Authorized the president to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the Untied States and to prevent further aggression. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Johnson expanded American involvement by shifting his policy to a sustained bombing campaign against North Vietnam -
Tet Offensive
Vietcong and North Vietnamese launched a massive surprise attack. Guerrilla fighters attacked almost all of the American air bases in South Vietnam and most major Southern cities and provincial capitals. -
Vietnamization
The process of making South Vietnam assume more of the war effort by slowly withdrawing American troops from Vietnam. -
Kent State University
Kent State University Ohio National Guard opened fire on demonstrators without an order to do so and killed 4 students, and left 9 others injured. -
26th Amendment
The 26th Amendment was ratified, giving all people age 18 and older the right to vote in all State and Federal elections. (Exact date is uncertain) -
U.S. Withdrawals its Troops
Opposing sides signed an agreement which ended the war and restored the peace in Vietnam -
War Powers Act
(Date is uncertain) Promoted a way to reestablish some limits on executive power. -
South Vietnam Surrenders
North Vietnam captured Saigon, South Vietnam's capital--> Vietnam united under Communist rule.
