Gulf of Tonkin Incident
U.S. destroyer Maddox exchanged shots with North Vietnamese boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. Two days later, the Maddox reported another reported once again coming under fire. By the end of the day, President Lyndon B. Johnson had ordered retaliatory air strikes. -
Pleiku
Was a U.S. airbase 250 miles North from Saigon. It was attacked by Viet Cong and took 8 U.S. soldiers in the process. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Was the code name for the American bombing campaign. The operation was to attack targets through North Vietnam and weaken them. -
Battle of Ia Drang Valley
Was the first major engagement between North Vietnamese and U.S. soldiers. Lt. Col. Harold G. Moore 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry conducted a heliborne assault into Landing Zone X-Ray near the Chu Pong hills. Ended in strong U.S. victory. -
Tet Offensive
This was an surprise attack by North Vietnam on more than 100 South Vietnam villages and outposts. Although the Americans and South Vietnamese held off the offensive. North Vietnamese achieved a strategic victory and this was the slow start of the American withdraw from the Vietnam War. -
My Lai Massacre
Was the brutal killing of 500 plus innocent Vietnamese villagers in My Lai village. Killed by Charlie Company and the main perpetrator was William Calley. -
Ho Chi Minh Dies
Ho Chi Minh the North Vietnamese Communist Revolutionary Leader for 25 years dies from Congestive heart failure. -
Vietnamization
On this day President Nixon starts to slowly withdraw U.S. troops and begin to hand over the more combat duties to South Vietnamese troops. He did this as a result of American protests and opposition to the Vietnam War. -
Kent State Shooting
Was the unjust killing of 4 and injuring of 8 Kent State University Students. They were killed and injured when a group of Ohio National Guard members opened fire on the protesting students. -
Cease Fire / End of War
President Nixon finally declares a cease fire. When Nixon announced this Saigon was in controller of about 75% of South Vietnam territory and about 85% of the population. All 100% of U.S. troops including P.O.W. were pulled out of War by March. -
South Vietnam Surrenders
Almost as soon as the U.S. left Vietnam the North took advantage of this opportunity and stuck soon after. In late December 1974 that was the Norths first attack and it weakened the South greatly. After many repeated attacks the South finally surrenders to the North.
