TRUMAN DOCTRINE
This document allowed the United States to aid the countries of Greece and Turkey with $400 million to help with military inhancement and economic assistance. This boosted the economy of Europe. -
POLICY OF CONTAINMENT
This was a policy that prevented the spread of communism in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. Harry Truman was hoping that when this took place it would stop the ideas of communism and surely communism would fall. -
MARSHALL PLAN
The Marshall Plan in place to help the European economy after WWII. About $13 billion were loaned to 17 countries throughout Europe. This stabalized the economy and political structures. -

NATO was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that solved crisis that were in the European area. -
CREATION OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY
It is formerly known as West Germany, but became its own nation after the split in Germany. This was after WWII to conserve the economy and the Western Germans did not agree with communism. -
SOVIET UNION TESTS THEIR FIRST ATOMIC BOMB
It exploded in a testing range in Kazakstan on August 29, 1949. This came to the United States as a surprise because they did not think the technology there was advanced enough to make a nuclear bomb. This caused the US to build up on more nuclear weapons and stop the Soviets influence. -
COMMUNISTS DEFEAT NATIONALISTS IN CHINA
The military and financial aid for the nationalist in China was immense, but not enough to stop the Chinese communist party. In October many battles were won by the communist and Mao Zedong declared the peoples republic of China. Chiang and his nationalist fled to Taiwan to regain efforts of retaking the mainland of China. -
Korean War
Aprroximently 75,00 soldiers from North Korea's army crossed the 38th parallel and attacked the people of South Korea. In July, 1950 America sent troops to enter the war on the side of South Korea. The reason is the North Koreans were communists and the South Koreans were anti-communists. -
STALIN’S DEATH
Joseph Stalin died on March 5, 1953. He went down in USSR history as being on of the most violent and assertive dictator. -
SOVIETS LAUNCH SPUTNIK I INTO SPACE
The Soviets launched the first in orbit satillite in the history of the war. This led to the United States to instead go to the moon. They were the first to land feet on the moon. -
BERLIN WALL ERECTED
The Berlin wall began conscrution on the night of August 13, 1961. This was built to prevent the East Germans from going to West Germany because the German gov wanted to keep the people for population and to get them to believe in the communists party. -
CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
Kennedy wanted to blockade an import or export around Cuba so nothiing good or bad can get in or out. This was called a quarantine. He demanded the removal of all Russian missles to be moved and dismantled from the island, but that did not happen until later. -
JOHNSON ESCALATES TROOP NUMBERS TO START VIETNAM WAR
President Lyndon B. Johnson authorizes to add an additional seventy-five thousand troops to Vietnam in June of 1965. The next month Johnson decides to add another one thousand troop to the mix and also authorized another 100,000 troops for 1966. -
NIXON SIGNS AGREEMENT TO WITHDRAW FROM VIETNAM
U.S., Viet Cong, North and South Vietnam decide to sign an agreement. This allowed the halt of war for 60 days until the United States withdrew troops from Vietnam. -
SOVIET INVASION OF AFGHANISTAN
The Soviet Union brought in troops to Afganistan to support the communists government against the anti-communists of Muslim guerillas. This fight lasted until 1992. -
BERLIN WALL TORN DOWN
For 28 years the Berlin wall was used to imprison the East Germans from leaving communist Germany, but now the East German government failed therefore reuniting Germany by breaking down the wall.
