Founding of Nintendo
The household name Nintendo that many know and love originally was very different. Nintendo was originally founded on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Kyoto, Japan. The company was founded as a manufacturer and marketer of Hanafuda, a Japanese card game. -
The First Video Game
The founder of Atari and the co-creator, Nolan Bushnell, created the first video game, Pong. Pong was first introduced at a small bar, Andy Capps Tavern in Sunnyvale, California.The arcade cabinet stops working. The reason for this is because it is packed with quarters from bar patrons - a legend is born. -
Jumpman
Nintendo's Donkey Kong introduces a brand new, never-seen-before character: Jumpman. A year later, Jumpman adopts a new, much familiar name: Mario. He is named after his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. -
NIntendo Entertainment System
Initially released as the Famicom in Japan two years prior, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was a bestseller in the States.The NES also revived the ailing video game industry in the United States. -
Game Boy
Nintendo dominating the video game scene also popularizes handheld gaming with the Game Boy. While not the first handheld console with interchangeable cartridges, the Game Boy enticed people with its long battery life, good gameplay, and ease of use. The Game Boy was discontinued in 2003 -
Playstation
Instead of Nintendo, Sony introduced a new console, the Playstation. The Playstation was the first disc console, rather than cartridge based. The Playstation allowed for extensive cutscenes in between gameplay and recorder dialogue - video games began to appear movie-like. -
World's Best Selling Console
Sony's Playstation 2 (PS2) is the world's best selling console. One of the most defining features of the PS2 is its backwards compatibility, meaning Playstation games could also be played on the console. After over 12 years of production, the console would be discontinued. -
Modern Day
While prevalent still, PC gaming saw a decline as people favored consoles for games. From around the 1990's there was a shift from 2D graphics to 3D, such as polygon models and animations.
