Video Game History

  • OXO

    OXO
In 1952, A.S. Douglas created OXO. The game was basically tic tac toe but on a computer. This set the world up for the Videogame storm to come.
  • The Brown Box

    The Brown Box
The Brown Box was created by Ralph Baer, and considered to be the first videogame console. It could be played on the television and had some games prebuilt into it. This was a very primitive console but got the job done at the time.
  • Atari's Pong

    Atari's Pong
Atari released the game pong in 1972. This game was made for arcades and was a huge success. This is very important because before Pong, there weren't any video games in arcades, they were mainly made up of pinball machines and pool.
  • The Gameboy

    The Gameboy
The Gameboy was released by Nintendo in 1989. The Gameboy is very important because we get to see people getting into the handheld aspect of gaming. All of your favorite games could be put into this little device to carry with you everywhere.
  • Videogame Rating Council

    Videogame Rating Council
Due to many upset parents, Sony created the Videogame Rating Council. What did the VRC do you might ask? Well they gave rating out for games based on age groups, kind of like how the movies did.
  • Steam

    Steam
In 2003, Valve releases a Videogame platform or website (I dont know what to call it) called Steam, where people can play many different titles of games, without having to own physical copies of the game. It makes it easier for developers to update their games and get them out quickly. Steam is still highly used to this day, which means Valve did something right!
  • Motion Capture System

    Motion Capture System
The Motion capture system was introduced by Xbox in 2007 and featured a camera that could track your movements and put them into the game. It was a great idea but was kind of ignored because the Wii was released later with its Motion controllers. I like to think that it set up for VR technology because people today are using their old Kinects to create Full body tracking for VR.
  • Mobile gaming

    Mobile gaming
2009 is where we begin to see mobile gaming take a huge leap in popularity. We got grandma over here who hates the videogames her grandson plays, playing angry birds and other classics on her iphone. Mobile gaming will stay pretty popular for many years.
  • Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure

    Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
Spyro's Adventure is very important for one reasonL: NFC tags. NFC tags are little tags that can be scanned and let the character be rendered into the game. Skylanders was smart and made the NFC tags on little character figurines thats kids loved. This set up for many great games in the future.
  • Playstation 4 Pro

    Playstation 4 Pro
The Playstation 4 pro is very important because of 2 reasons. It's capable of 4k gaming, and it has VR headset compatibility with their PSVR. And as everyone keeps saying, VR is the technology of the future so Playstation has something better than Xbox at the moment.
