Franz Ferdinand and his wife are killed by a Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. Princip shot at point-blank range and killed both of them. Austria-hungary declares war on Serbia.
War is declared and in one week Austria-hungary and Germany were lined up against Great Britain, Belgum, Russia, France, and Serbia. On August 1 1914, Germany declares war on Russia. On August 3 1914, Germany declares war on France. On August 4 1914, the United Kingdom declares war on Germany, after Germany invades Belgium. On August 6 1914, Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia and Serbia declares war on Germany. -
President Woodrow Wilson makes an announcement.
President Wilson formally announces that the United States will remain neutral in the war. Wilson hoped that America could be “impartial in thought as well as in action” but was soon compromised by Germany’s attempt to quarantine of the British Isles. -
Battle of Tannenberg begins.
Russia sent two armies into East Prussia. The Russian army advanced to the northeastern corner of East Prussia, while Samsonov’s Army made headed into the southwest, planning to join with Rennenkampf’s men and pin the outnumbered German army between them. -
Germans fire shells.
They fire shells filled with chlorine gas. This becomes the first time that huge amounts of gas are used in the battle. Because of this French lines practically collapse. The Germans are unable to take advantage of this opportunity. -
Lusitania sinks.
A German U-boat torpedoed and sank the Lusitania. America was extremely angry that Germany harmed citizens that didn't do anything to anyone. Thousands of people were harmed. -
Limiting Submarines
Germany wanted to try and keep the United States out of the war. Kaiser Wilhelm suspends unrestricted submarine warfare. This only hinders German efforts to stop America from sending supplies to France and Britain. -
Zimmerman Telegram
This is a message written by a German foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmerman. It is calling Mexico to join in a war against the US so that Mexico can recover the territory lost in the Mexican war. British spies intercepted it and made it public to everyone. -
US enters the war.
The US enters the war on the side of Britain and France. Congress declares war on Germany addressed by president Woodrow Wilson. 19 large mines containing 455 tones of explosive donated by the British. -
Congress passes Selective Service Act.
This act gave President Wilson the power to draft soldiers. When congress declared war they had an army of about 100,000 volunteered soldiers. This was not going to end well. The only solution was to adopt military conscription. -

Russia signs the "Treaty of Brest Litovsk" abandoning the Allied war granting independence for Russians holding in eastern Europe. In 1939 Soviet Russia regained the Ukraine in the Russian Civil war and seized part of Poland. -
Battle of Cantigny
About 4,000 US soldiers capture the village of Cantigny, on the Somme River in France. This battle lasted about two hours. Teams of flamethrowers aided the U.S. to advance through the German village, which was quickly overrun. The Americans took approximately 100 German prisoners by the end of that day. -

Andrew John Fisher and his wife die.
The Great Depression came in 1929. Fisher survived the early years of the depression but later lost his life, as well as his wife, in a horrible auto accident in 1935.
