Deseret Petitions for Statehood
Mormon leaders convene and wrote a constitution and draw up a petition to gain statehood for the state of Deseret. -

Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 turned the large statepossible of Deseret into a smaller Utah Territory. -
Polygamy practice announced
LDS leasdership announces that some of its members practice polygamy. This announcement disgusts many of the citizens in the United States and its practice for 38 years prevented Utah's statehood. -
Utah War
President Buchanan instigaged the Utah War by removing Brigham Young as Utah Territory govener, then sending army troops into Utah to ensure Young's removal. -
The Morill Act
Congress passes the Morill Act due to the dissatisfaction the non-Mormon residents had towards the Mormon theocracy and polygamy practicing majority that surrounded them. This act made the practice of bigamy a federal offense in the Utah Territory. -
Transcontinental Railroad
The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad opened Utah and the rest of the west. This brought both more Mormons and gentils into Utah, creating more tenstions between both sides. -
The Liberal Party
The Liberal Party was created in Utah to oppose the majority political affiliation, the Mormons. -
Free School Law
Most of the states in the Union at this time passed a law requiring free schools. -
The People's Party
The People's Party was established in response to the Liberal political partying being formed. -
Poland Act
An act passed by congress which provides more authority to prosecute polygamists. -
Polygamy Illegal
The Federal Court makes the practice of polygamy a Federal Crime. -
The Edmunds Act
The Edmunds Act was a further rule the U.S. government passed to fight the continual practice of polygamy. Thsi act was created because the Morill Act was not fully enforced due to the Civil War in the United States. -
The Edmunds-Tucker Act
This act would take property away from the LDS church, as well as take away the right of Utah women to vote. -
Utah's new Constition
Utah writes up a new constitution making the practice of polygamy a misdemeanor. Many do not believe Utah will uphold this law, and statehood is denied. -
"The Manifesto"
LDS President Wilford Woodruff announces "The Manifesto" an act that renounces the practice of polygamy in the LDS church. -
Free School in Utah
Utah passes an law that requires free schools. -
People's Party Disbanded
The People's political party was dispanded, and members either sought affiliation with either the LDS Democrats or the Repulican parties. -
Liberal Party Disbanded
The Liberal Party, also known as the ant-Mormon party, wsa disbanded. -
Enabling Act
Congress created this act to outline the steps required in order for Utah to achieve statehood. -
Party Alligence Bill
The United States Senate passes a bill assigning party alliegences to either the Republican and Democratic parites, to align the parties with those found amongst the remander of the stats. Grover Cleveland signs in agreement. -
Republican Govenors
Utahns chose two republicans to serve to represent Utah in the U.S. Senate. -
New Utah Constitution
Mormans and non-Mormons convene and write up a new constitution for Utah. -
Utah is the 45th state
Utah is admitted into the Union, becoming the 45th state in the United States.
