The Start of Immigration
The start of immigration came about when english settlers traveled by boat and arrived and then settled after traveling on a river called James River. -
Oath of Allegiance
Foreigners from Germany settled in Pennsylvania without any certificates demonstrating their identity, origin and intention. The Governor of Pennsylvania and provincial Council then ordered that those aliens take the oath of allegiance to stay. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation kept citizenship and naturalization of aliens under individual states' control. -
The First Alien Naturalization Act
Enacted by the newly created U.S. Government this act provided the first rules in all of the U.S. which granted national citizenship. The law was limited to only aliens who were free whites and did not include any form of servants, slaves, and most women. -
Foreign Slave Trade Ends
The slave trade is now illegal in the U.S. so the 50,000 slaves brought into the U.S. became the first illegal immigrants. -
The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
This treaty resulted in the U.Ss Acquiring Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California, and different parts of Utah and Nevada from Mexico. This also brought an end to the Mexican-American War and extended citizenship to 80,000 Mexicans living in Texas, California, and Southwest America. -
The Homestead Act
This was when the U.S. Government offered free land to immigants who lived on the land for at least 5 years. -
The Chinese Exclusion Act
This started the immigration exclusion era because it stopped Chinese immigration for ten years and also prohibited any Chinese from becoming U.S. citizens. -
The Immigration Act of 1882
This Act levied a tax of 50 cents on all immigrants landing at U.S. ports. It also made several categories of immigrants ineligible for citizenship. -
The Gift of the Statue of Liberty
The U.S. was given the Statue of Liberty as a gift from the French because it symbol of freedom. Also this gift welcomed immigration to America. -
14th Amendment
The Supreme Court Confirmed that the 14th Amendment will give citizenship to anyone and everyone who is born in the United States. -
The Labor Appropriations Act of 1924
Congress passed the Labor Appropriation Act of 1924 which officially establishing the border patrol to secure the borders between inspection stations like Arizona. Inspection Stations made sure that all illegal immigrants were fully inspected. -
Terrorist Attacks
Because of the terrorist attacks we made sure that the U.S. Department of Defense would expand military support along the borders. -
"Minuteman Project"
In Arizona there was a group calling themselves the Minuteman Project and they stationed many men and women along the U.S.- Mexico border to make an effort to track down undocumented immigrants. -
Children Can Stay
President Obama announced that he would now allow undocumented immigrants who came to U.S. as children are now able to stay in the country.
