Congress set up immigration quotas favoring immigrants from Northwestern Europe. -
Immigration Act of 1924
Introduced a Quota system limiting each country to 2% of foriegn-born residents. -
Immigration Reform Act of 1965
This policy removed the old quota system and replaced it with a new law. The new law was driven by two reunifying families and giving priority to certain immigrants from the Eastern Hemisphere. It set limits at 170,000 for Eastern Hemisphere and 120,000 for Western Hemisphere. -
Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986
President Regan created the IRCA with two purposes in mind. He wanted to slow down illigeal immigration by punishing employers who knowingly hired undocumented workers. Second, he wanted to offer a way fir long term, undocumented immigrants to become citizens. -
Immigration Act of 1990
Passed the law limiting a country to no more then 7% of America total immigrant population to prevent any one country from making up most of the immigrant population. -
Immigration Reform Act of 1996
Increased the border patrol and stiffented penalties for creating false citizenship pepers or smuggling undocumented works. -
