Natrualization Act of 1790
It required for immigrants to have lived in the US for at least 2 years in order to become a US citizen. -
Naturalization Act of 1795
It lengthened required residency to become citizen. -
Naturalization Act of 1798
It further lengthened required residency to become citizen and registers white immigrants to establish date of initial residency. -
Page Act of 1875
First federal immigration law and it prohibited the entry of immigrants considered as "undesirable." (Asians) -
Chinese Exclusion Act
Restricted immigration of chinese laborers for 10 years and prohibited the chinese from becoming citizens -
Immigration Act of 1891
Immigration Bureau was to deport unlawful immigrants, used to empower immigration lwas, and first comprehension immigrations lwas for the U.S. -
Geary Act
It required all Chinese residents of the US to carry a resident permit. It also didn't allow Chinese to bear witness in court, and receive bail in habeas corpus proceedings. -
Immigration Act of 1907
The Act was part of a series of reforms aimed at restricting the increasing number and groups of immigrants coming into the U.S. before and after World War I. (Mostly regarding people with disease and disabilities) -
Emergency Quota Act
It limited the number of immigants from any country to 3% of those already in the US. -
Nationality Act of 1940
The law defined who was not eligible for citizenship, and how citizenship could be lost or terminated. -
Magnuson Act
It allowed Chinese immigration for the first time since the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and permitted some Chinese immigrants already residing in the country to become naturalized citizens. -
Immigration and Nationality Act
It set the quota for aliens with skills needed in the US. -
Immigration Reform and Control Act
It started penalties or punishments for knowingly hiring immigrants and provided a pardon to immigrants already in the US. -
Immigration Act of 1990
It increased legal immigration limit and created a diversity admissions category. -
Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996
It directly addresses border patrol and upgrades needed for border patrol enforcers, equipment, and the overall patrolling process. -
Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act
It requires that schools report foreign students attending classes and stipulates that foreign nationals in the US will be required to carry IDs with biometric technlogy. -
REAL ID Act
It required the use of IDs meeting certain security standards to enter government buildings, to board planes, and to open bank accounts. -
Immigration Act of 1924
It imposed first permanent numerical limit on immigration.
