The first significan legislature on immigration was passed which included reporting of immigration and rules for passengers from US ports bound for Europe -
Contract Labor Law
This law allowed for the recruiting of immigrants for federal labor. -
Henderson vs. New York
Court case that rules that all state laws governing immigration are unconstitutional and that congress must regulate “foreign commerce.” As a result charity workers are burdened with helping immigrants and they petition congress to regulate immigration. Congress prohibits convicts and prostitutes from entering the country. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
The Chinese Exclusion act is passed which suspended Chinese immigration for 10 years and barred Chinese in U.S. from citizenship. It also barred convicts, lunatics, and others unable to care for themselves from entering. -
Ellis Island
Ellis island opened to screen immigrants entering on east coast (Angel Island screened those on the west.) Ellis island officials immediately deported women that were traveling alone. -

Immigration act provides for literacy tests for those over 18, and barred all immigrants from asia -
Quotas Act
Quotas act limits immigrants to 3% of each nationality present in the U.S. in 1910. -

Luce- Cellar Act
The act provided a quota of 100 Filipinos, and 100 Indians to immigrate into the United States per year. -
Immigration & Nationality Act
Immigration and Nationality Act eliminated race as a bar to immigration or citizenship. Japan’s quota was set at 185 annually, China’s stayed at 105; other Asian countries were given 100 each. Northern and Western Europe’s quota was set at 85% of all immigrants. As well, tighter restrictions were placed on immigrants coming from British colonies. -
Hart-Celler Act
The Hart-Celler Act is created which abolishes national origins quotas and established separate ceilings for the eastern and western hemispheres. -
Imigration Act
cImmigration Act of 1990 limited unskilled workers to 10,000/year. -
Enhances Border Security and Visa Entry from act
Provided for more Border Patrol agents, required that schools report foreign students attending classes. -
SB 1070
Under this law, it is a state crime to be in the country illegally and legal immigrants will be required to carry paperwork proving their status. Arizona police will generally be required to question anyone they 'reasonably suspect' of being undocumented -
HB 56
As the law stands, police are allowed to racially profile anyone they suspect of being illegal, all contracts with undocumented immigrants are invalid, and it's now a crime for undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver's license or even a job.
