    Modern Feminism A strong belief of women's rights. It is usually shown through protests, books, etc.
  • Exceptionalism

    Exceptionalism
    America in the First World War The belief that someone/something, in this case a nation, is different, or unique. In this case, many Americans believed they were different from other countries so they tried to stay out of Europe's conflicts. America stayed isolated. Americans allowed the oceans to protect them. After Archduke Ferdinand was killed the U.S decided to stay neutral and maintain isolation, but that didn't last long.

    The Gilded Ages; RailroadsThe Transcontinental Railroad, dreamt of by Americans since trains were brought to America, was built by the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific rail companies. Union Pacific began building in Nebraska and Central Pacific began building in California. On May 10th, Leland Stanford from Union Pacific hammered the last spike in, the golden spike, at Promontory Summit near Ogden, Utah. This railroad paved the way for many more cross-country railroads to be built making traveling faster and easier.

    The Great Upheaval The rail workers were given their second pay cut in 8 months by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company; so workers in Martinsburg, WV went on strike. They put all the trains in the roundhouse saying none would move until their pay was restored. Strikes were taken care of by local officials but in this case they needed more help. The trains ended up not moving until President Hayes sent the National Guard in. This was an important event because after the Martinsburg strike, the strike spread.

    Americanize the Indians Americanize is to make something/someone American. When the Native Americans were forced into reservations they were also forced to be more American. White people would disregard their languages and cultures and try to change the children to look like Americans, like cut their hair and give them different clothes. Children's names would even be changed to American names.

    The Spanish-American War and Its ConsequencesThis treaty gave the U.S. the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico and gave Spain $20 million for its losses. It also made Cuba independent. Because of the treaty the U.S. was called hypocritical by anti-imperialists because they were forming an empire and did not approve when Europe was making their empire and in the war they had just fought they were not supposed to gain the Philippine but were supposed to free Cuba. Also, Filipino rebels had a rebellion against Americans, lasting 3 years.

    Farwell to IsolationOne of the events leading to this was Germany and its unrestricted U-boat warfare. Though Wilson sent many letters telling Germany it was against the neutrality treaty, it continued and after the Lusitania was sunk Wilson was angry. The Zimmerman Telegraph was the last straw. Sent to Mexico from Germany, it said that if Mexico distracted the U.S. from the European war then they would help take territories back from the U.S.

    The Age of the AutomobileOnce Henry Ford began using assembly lines to make cars, they got cheaper and more popular. During the 1920s more and more cars were owned, they were getting more popular. The popularity of cars created lots of new jobs, making cars, making roads, and mechanics are a few. More motels, gas stations, and roadside diners began popping up on long routes. Also, railroads began to get less popular. Cars gave people more freedom, including teens, and allowed then to go more places and go on vacations.

    This was the code name for the atomic bomb. Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi knew it was dangerous that the axis powers had knowledge of atomic technology and decided to tell the president. It took a talk with Fermi and a letter from Einstein before he decided to proceed. The project was worked on in only a few universities until a breakthrough; then the project began to advance rapidly. Within the next 5 years the atomic bomb was created, the same atomic bombs used on Japan ending, that war.

    The New Deal Roosevelt won the election against Hoover with a promise for "a new deal for the American people." Roosevelt did not have a concrete plan to end the depression but he experimented a lot, trying everything he thought could help, from changing banks to changing the rules for working. Roosevelt also kept everyone updated with his weekly fireside chat on the radio. Roosevelt was also able to give most Americans jobs.

    1930s Isolationism A union of all the Americas, North, Central, and South. During the 1930s the Western Hemisphere came together to face the problems over the seas.

    Pearl HarborJapan wanted an Empire spanning East Asia. Since they had an alliance with Russia and Europe was fighting Hitler, the U.S. was the only one in the way. The U.S. was also beginning to stop sending Japan supplies; by the end of 1940 they started sending supplies to China, who was resisting Japan. With the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan hoped to cripple the United States Pacific Fleet and take the Philippines. The bombing killed about 3,000 Americans and destroyed about 6 battleships.

    The United NationsThe United Nations began with 51 members. The United Nations is like the League of Nations in many ways. First of all, they talk about problems that need to be stopped or prevented. They are trying to avoid another war. They were also created so that representatives from different countries could get together and talk, so no one becomes isolated like America was. They also are trying to prevent violence, in order to prevent wars. The United Nations now has almost 200 members.

    The Cold War EruptsThe Cold war lasted about 45 years. The main 2 powers in the war were the US and the USSR; communism was the main cause of the war. America was afraid that communism would spread, the USSR was Communist. During the war there were no direct battles between the US and the USSR. In the end the USSR lost and the US was the only super power. The end of the Cold War caused more problems for the US because now they had a bunch of little countries fighting them instead of one big nation.

    America Rocks and RollsSatan's music, or rock and roll, was called such by Churches because of the new dances that came with the music. It was also hated by most of the older generations because it went against all of their music and because it came from the lower class people. It was even banned from many schools and radio stations. But, the bigger generation, the younger generation, loved it. For example, after Elvis was on the Ed Sullivan Show, the show ratings skyrocketed.

    The End of the American Century Globalization is integration of the whole world. America's pop-culture is spread everywhere, McDonalds is almost more recognizable than the Christian cross and Hollywood movies are everywhere.

    A RevolutionRosa Parks, a black woman, sat down in the front row of the African-American section of the bus. When a white man ordered her and three other black people to move, Rosa didn't move. Because she didn't move the driver had her arrested and she was fined $10. What she didn't know was that this action would start a revolution. After the Boycott of Montgomery Busses, where 99% of the African Americans in the city refused to ride the bus, segregated busses were banned on November 23, 1956.

    Living in the Information AgeIt was developed by the Department of Defense for the military to operate a computer from a different place. At first it was used by scientists and was under the government’s control, until 1984. It was super slow because it worked over phone lines but that problem was soon fixed. In the 1990s the World Wide Web was developed, mostly for commercial purposes. Then electronic mail (e-mail) was invented. Finally, ‘surfing the net’ became a past time, and now we have the internet we do today.

    Bill Clinton is Accused of having an Affair with Monica Lewinsky
    Republicans vs.DemocratsClinton was accused of having sexual relation with Lewinsky during his first term. This accusation nearly got him impeached from the office. He continued to deny the relationship even though there was a lot of evidence against him. Republicans were very angry with this report and an independent council was even chosen to gather evidence against him. At the end of the summer Clinton finally admitted to affair and said that he was ashamed. Because of it he became the 2nd president to be impeached.
