The Pilgrims were a group of Separatists who branched off from other religions and were very strict regarding religion. Many were thrown into jail and even tortured for not having the same beliefs as the state church. -

Quakers suffered greatly in England for they were religious dissenters much like the Puritans and Separatists, which were targeted. Penn (founder of PA) saw many people of his religion and he saw potential for a religious refuge. -

The Great Awakening refers to revitalization of religious piety that the American colonies faced from 1730 to 1770. Together, the colonies lead a movement to reform the church of England. -

The great awakening movement to reform the church of England ended in 1770. -
Virginia Statues
The Virginia Bill of Rights had guaranteed free exercise of religion, without ending the religious establishment. Separate clauses protected free exercise but prohibited establishment but the clauses weren't included in the Virginia Statue of Religious Freedom in 1776.
