Creation of Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney, and it removed the dirt from the cotton. This was a significantly quicker way of cleaning cotton, and therefore the South needed more slaves. -

Texas belonged to Mexico, however Texas wanted to be a slave state, and Mexico banned slavery. They both had different cultural values which lead to the war. -

At Sutter’s Mill in California, James Marshall discovered gold. When the news of the discovery spread, over forty thousand came to California. -

This was an anti-slavery book. Tom, the slave, refused to listen to his masters orders and was brutally beaten. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act allowed for Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they would allow slavery or not (popular sovereignty). -
“Bleeding Kansas”
During Bleeding Kansas, the citizens decided if it should be a slave state or not. Pro-slavery people attacked and killed people that did not like slavery. -
Attack on Charles Summer
A pro-slavery person attaced Charles Sumner with a cane. -
Dred Scott v Sanford
After his owner died, Dred Scott demanded he should be freed because he lived in Illinois for a bit with his owner(a free state). He went to court but they ruled against him because he was not a citizen, and they were racist. -
Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown was anti-slavery, and lead a raid because he wanted to help end slavery. Brown’s men ended up getting killed and Brown got sentenced to death. -
Election of 1860
The North mostly voted for Abraham Lincoln because he was anti-slavery, and the South didn’t for this reason. -
Southern Secession
Ten Southern states wanted to withdraw from the government. They were upset with Lincoln and wanted a self government.
