John Scopes created a national conflict by breaking a law caused by fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is the belief of the word-for-word interpretation of the Bible. The fundamentalists didn't believe in the theory of evolution, therefore they did not want it taught in public schools. They convinced 12 states including Tennessee to ban the teaching of evolution.
