Eisenhower
Eisenhower
Eisenhower was the thirty fourth president of the United States. He had also been a five star general during World War II. His famous slogan was "I like Ike". This was very attractive to the public and had been major in his election. -
Brown Vs. Board of Education
Brown VS. Board of EducationThe supreme court ruled that segregation in schools in unconstitutional. This was a huge leap in civil rights. This ruling changed the previous outlook which had praised "seperate but equal" facilities, which is an ironic policy just in its name. This was a victory for Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP. -
Operation Wetback
Operation Wetback, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Wetback Eisenhower had launched "Operation Wetback". He did this in response to increasing illegal immigration. He believed that this illegal immigration would lower the wages of American citizens and lead to corruption. -
Geneva Conference
Geneva ConferenceThe purpose of this conference was to figure out how to unify Vietnam. The US greatly wanted to prevent communism from spreading to other countries. The US, UK, Soviet Union, and People's Republic of China had all discussed ways to create peace in Indochina. The Geneva Accords were created; Viet Minh would rule communist North Vietnam and the State of Vietnam would control the South -
Rosa Parks
Rosa ParksRosa Parks had refused to give up her seat to a white, this defied the normal behavior of the Blacks during the time period. She was arrested. Her brave act initiated the Montgomery bus boycotts. MLK Jr. was a leader in these boycotts. -
Eisenhower-Little Rock
Eisenhower and Little RockOrval Faubus does not allow nine black students to enter school. Eisenhower reacts to this segregation by sending in the National Guard and federal troops to assist the students. The students were known as the "Little nine". -
SNCC
SNCCThe Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was founded. It was inspired by the various sit ins that had been taking place. It provided young blacks with an oppurtunity to help with the civil rights movement. It had at first promoted peaceful means, but after violent moves by the whites, it had changed. Rather than the "nonviolent", it became more radical and "national" -
Kennedy
KennedyJohn F. Kennedy was the thirty fifth president of the United States. He had defeated Nixon in the election of 1960. He was the youngest president of the States and also had served in World War II. He gave the famous qoute "Ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country" -
"New Frontier"

He had enhanced american society with many domestic polices. The Peace Corps was started which was domestic and foreign because it enhanced American morality and helped others. He wanted to get America into space. Alan Shepherd was sent to space by him. -
Kennedy and Meredith
Kennedy and MeredithJames Meredith was the first black who had enrolled in the University of Mississippi. This had caused much violence. Kennedy had eased the situation by sending in 5000 federal troops. -
March on Washington
March on WashingtonMartin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. This had praised integration and had gave hope to many people. Approxiametely, two hundred thousand people had participated in listening to this speech. It was very enlightening to those who had thought they lost all hope. -
Johnson
JohnsonJohnson was the thirty sixth president of the United States. He had served as a Representative, Senator, Vice President, and of course President. Johnson wanted to build what is known as "The Great Society". -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
Gulf of TonkinTwo US destroyers were bombarded by North Vietnamese torpedos. The USS Maddrox was performing signal patrols and this engaged the communist torpedos. A sea battle had resulted and had caused various casualties. This incident eventually resulted in the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution -
Dangers during the Struggle
DangersThe bodies of three civil rights workers were found in an earthen dam. These young men, two white and one black, had been working to get Blacks registered to vote. They were harshly murdered by th KKK. Events such as this started to make Blacks tired of waiting. -
Medicare
Medicare, http://www.mysupplementmedicare.com/Johnson had established Medicare. This was a beneficial program for the welfare of those aged 65 and older. They received access to health care. -
Fall of Malcolm X
Death of Malcolm X Malcolm X had changed the movement. He had initiated fear into it and praised seperatism. He had created many followers and was shot on this day. This led to much anger within the Blacks. The movement had two different sides now. -
Voting Rights Act
Voting Rights Act
Congress passed this act in 1965. Before this, there were many restrictions placed on Blacks if they wanted to vote such as literacy acts. This act abolished them. Blacks were now able to enfranchis with more ease. -
EEO-Johnson
EEOJohnson passed this act in support of the civil rights movement. It provided that all persons would receive equal oppurtunity for employment. If this did not occur, the person hiring would be punished by some means. -
Black Panthers
Black PanthersThe Black Panthers were founded. Blacks were tired of waiting so they resulted in militant tactics. A seperatist outlook was prominent. Huey Newton and Bobby Seele had started this party. It had caused much fear to the whites who may have started to consider integration because of the presence of such militant parties. -
The Tet Offensive
Tet OffensiveThere should have been a cease of fire during this time period as it was the Vietnamese holiday of Tet. The North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong of the South launched an attack known as the Tet Offensive which involved an attack of South Vietnamese towns and cities. Militarily, the United States were victors. It was shocking to learn the strength of the Communist coordination. Over 45,000 communist losses had occured through the offensive. -
My Lai Massacre
My LaiThis was a mass murder of between 300 and 500 innocent South Vietnamese people by the US troops. It involved the troops of the Charlie company and William Calley was convicted. This event created global outrage and direct opposition to the US. -
Fall of MLK JR.
Fall of MLK JR.This man had done great things for the movement. His "Letter from Birmingham" had brilliantly expressed his views and addressed those of the blacks. His speeches had inspired and enlightened many. He was shot when he was on his balcony and killed. James Ray was convicted with the crime. -
Civil Rights Act
Civil Rights ActThis was a very important step in the movement. Johnsan had signed for this act. It prevented discrimination in the areas of sale, renting, and financing of housing. The act had assisted Blacks a great amount. It was initially weak, but then all individuals were guranteed protection under the fourteenth amendment. -
Nixon
NixonHe had the potential to be one of the greatest presidents of the United States. He was the thirty seventh president of the States. Nixon had a great record at Duke university Law school. -
EPA
EPA,http://thurj.org/blog/2011/12/2747/ Nixon had established the EPA. Designed to promote conservation. Itwas now understood that the environment was in danger therefore it was very helpful during the time period. -
Watergate
WatergateWatergate was the fall of Nixon. It eventually led to his resignation. An African American officer known as Wills had discovered duct tape on the door of the DNC and had called the cops. Nixon's burglars were caught. This led to an American outrage. -
Vietnamization
VietnamizationThe last of the US troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. The purpose in this was to allow South Vietnam to take more responsibility for the war. The US did evacuate many South Vietnamese citizens though. July 2,1976 Vietnam became unified and was the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. -
Ford
FordHe was the thirty eighth president of the United States. Ford was the first president to ever serve after a president had resigned. He served under very different circumstances. -
Ford's pardoning of Nixon

EHA
EHAThis was a great act that was proposed under Ford. It was the Education for Handicapped children. This showed the great morality that was present in American society as it greatly assisted those underprivileged.
