Proclomation of 1763
This proclamation didn't allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feared the conflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. They also couldn't afford to pay British troops to defend the western lands. Colonists were enraged by this Proclamation because they felt they had won the right to settle in Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian War. -
Quartering Act
As a result of a cost-saving measure, the Quartering Act was a requirement that forced the colonies to house British troops no matter what. Even of the poorest families, if a British soldier showed up at your door, you were required to welcome them into your home. It wasn't up to the people to decide when the soldier must leave, or even what they can eat. The outcome of this act was that it drove Britain into greater debt. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was created by Parliment in 1765 was a new kind of tax for the colonies. It required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing that a tax has been paid. Examples of documents were diplomas, wills, and contracts. -
Townshed Act
In a way to raise revenue, Parliment also passed the Townshed Acts. They created a sytem of duties, in which taxes on goods were collected before they entered the colonies. To enforce this act though, British soldiers had to have a warrant, or a "writs of assistance." -
Tea Act and Boston Tea Party
The Tea Act was when government taxed colonists on purchasing tea. In an response to that, colonists outburst in a rage of confliction, also known as the Boston Tea Party. The colonists ravagely destroyed and impaired the boxes of tea imported to the colonies. They disguised as indians to dump out the tea to hide their identity. This lead to the Intolerable Acts. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first occupations of the American Revoloutionary war. The battles defined the armed conflict between Great Britain and its 13 colonies. -
Olive Branch Petition
The Olive Branch Petition was an attempt by Congress to avoid a full-blown war with Great Britain. This affirmed American loyalty to great Britain. Soon though, this Petition was rejected. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was a statement which announced the split of the 13 colonies from Great Britain. This was dated as July 4, 1776; also know as the fourth of July. It's also the day were the Congress approved the wording of the Declaration.
