General Valeriano Weyler arrived in Cuba to try to regain control. He put the Cubans into concentration camps where thousands died from disease and starvation. Anyone caught outside of the concentration camp was an "enemy" and was killed. This created sympathy for Cuba in the United States.

The ship was built between 1888 and 1895. It was sent to Havana in January and on February 15th of 1898 the ship's gunpowder magazines exploded. Almost three-quarters of the ship's crew died during the exposion.

The battle started at 5:15 AM on May 1st. The firing was called to a stop at 7:45 when the Spanish Captain told the Americans that he was almost out of ammunition,but he told his crew that they stopped so they could have breakfast. The battle resumed at 10:40 AM,but it was done at 12:40 PM when the Spanish raised the white flag and surrendered.

The Battle of Guantánamo Bay was fought from June 6 to June 10 in 1898, during the Spanish-American War, when American and Cuban forces seized the commercially important harbor of Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Capturing the bay from the Spanish forces was greatly needed in the following battle of Santiago de Cuba and the invasion of Puerto Rico.

The Battle started on August 1st and did not end till August 5th. The battle was the only battle that the U.S. was force to withdraw thier position during the campaign of Puerto Rico.
