    The US were sending advisors to prepare the south vietnamese to fight. JFK believed it was necessary to train the south vietnamese to fight the North in case the north attacks the south.

    Eisenhower was one of the first people to explain domino theory. He talked about how each country would fall to communism, starting with china, and eventually to Vietnam. Eisenhower said that this must be stopped before it hits America.

    The Geneva Accords were there to decide the future of Vietnam. They decided that they would have Vietnam have an election to decide the government and president. The US were scared of this because they knew Ho Chi Minh would win since he has the most support out of Vietnam, and he was communist.

    Ngo Dinh Diem was supported by the US and one of the candidates for the Vietnam election. In october of 1955, he prevented the election and declared himself president by putting troops to block people from voting.

    The US ships were in Vietnam waters, and were annoying the Vietnamese. So the vietnamese fired torpedoes at the USS Maddox. This got us further to Vietnam war.
