If not for the Cold War, the stare-down between US and USSR, the Vietnam war might've not happen. The USSR was the one who made the americans afraid and use the domino theory. -
The US sends advisors to vietnam
The US were sending advisors to prepare the south vietnamese to fight. JFK believed it was necessary to train the south vietnamese to fight the North in case the north attacks the south. -
Eisenhower's domino theory speech
Eisenhower was one of the first people to explain domino theory. He talked about how each country would fall to communism, starting with china, and eventually to Vietnam. Eisenhower said that this must be stopped before it hits America. -

Geneva Accords
The Geneva Accords were there to decide the future of Vietnam. They decided that they would have Vietnam have an election to decide the government and president. The US were scared of this because they knew Ho Chi Minh would win since he has the most support out of Vietnam, and he was communist. -
Ngo Dinh Diem declares himself president
Ngo Dinh Diem was supported by the US and one of the candidates for the Vietnam election. In october of 1955, he prevented the election and declared himself president by putting troops to block people from voting. -
Vietcong was formed
Ngo Dinh Diem was a dictator to the vietnamese. The south vietnamese decided to take action.The south vietnamese from the Vietcong, AKA the national liberation front, VC, Victor-Charlie. They killed off Ngo dinh diem. They would be one of the main enemies of the US during the Vietnam War. -
Tonkin Gulf Incident
The US ships were in Vietnam waters, and were annoying the Vietnamese. So the vietnamese fired torpedoes at the USS Maddox. This got us further to Vietnam war. -
The "2nd" Attack
During a storm, the ships were receiving news of an attack from the North Vietnamese navy.There was no evidence of ships,bodies, or damage anywhere in the ocean. This was mass confusion, and LBJ decided to take action and declare war. Even though there was no evidence of this attack. -
Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution
LBJ passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This gives him the power to put soldiers on the land he commands, in this case vietnam. Near unanimously, this is passed. -

LBJ sends the first troops on March 8 of 1965. 3,500 marines land in vietnam. This is thought to the VC and North Vietnamese as an act of declaration of war and would lead to the battle of Ia Drang
