Early forms were typically unarmed. The machine gun was finally fixed to these aircraft to create a "fighter" aeroplane. -

On June 28, 1914, a teenage Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, as their motorcade went down the streets of Sarajevo. -

The Start of WW1 & US's neutrality
Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. US President Woodrow Wilson declared that the US would not take sides. -
Battle of the Marne
From 5-12 of September 1914, it resulted ini a n Allied victory against the German Army. -
The sinking of the Lusitania
Germany used unrestricted U-boat warfare. They attacked any ships goig in/out of Britain, including US ships.1915 Germany sank a British passenger ship, the Lusitania. 1,200 people were killed, 128 were Americans. The US was angered and wanted to go to war with Germany. -
Sussex
The sinking of the Sussex angered the US further as the Germans broke their promise to not attack passenger ships. Germany came up with the Sussex Pledge stating: No passenger ships would be sunk, only merchant ships carrying weapons would be fired upon, and the provision of saftey for the passengers of the merchant ships would be provided before attacking. -
US investments in war
The United States had big investments in Britian and France. A reason to enter was was to ensure a victory for these two countries so that the US would get payed back. -
Unrestricted submarine warfare
Unauthorized German submarines along the East coast of the US violated the Sussex pledge and it was a main reason in US entering WW1. -
The Zimmermann Telegram
The US intercepted the Zimmermann Telegram. IT said Germany was going to ask Mexico to help them fight against the US. -
US enters the war
The US Congress declared war on Germany and took the side of Great Britain, Russia and France.
