The proclomation of 1763 was put forth to stabilize and secure the new colonies of England. The colonists were not allowed to expand to the west beyond the appalachian mountains. This regulated trade, settlements, and made sure the colonists did not pick fights with native americans and so they could grow.

This territory was a significant addition to the country’s growth. It spanned over 260,000 miles and encompassed most states in the north east. The territory was distributed by congress to colonies near it so that they can expand without fighting for the land. This land was important for going forth with independence.

This enormous amount of land was an incredible advance for the U.S. at the time. It was 828,000 square miles. The country bought this land for 50 million francs. (france’s currency) That was equal to less than 4 cents per acre. It gave the country the Mississippi river and New Orleans.

This fertile land was great for farming and helped the U.S. grow. It was given after the second article of the 1818 treaty which allowed lands parallel to the Louisiana purchase be of U.S. territory.

Florida had a long coastline, being a penninsula. At the time, it was easier to trade by boat. Waterways were important, plus a lot of farmland. It was closer to southern continents and countries so trade was easier.

The U.S.-Canadian border between Maine and New Brunswick had long been in dispute. It was leading to war especially in the late 1830s. A temporary, diplomatic solution was worked out to solve this, called The Webster-Ashburton Treaty. It settled the Maine boundary dispute.

The U.S. claimed Texas in 1845 which bordered Mexico very closely. This annexation however, led to the Mexican-American war. Texas was a huge chunk of land which benefited the U.S. as well as was detrimental because of the war with Mexico.

Allowed more sea passages and farm land. Didn't last long though, It was divided and given to the U.S. and Great Britain in 1859.

This enormous piece of land was the very west of the NA. It offered sea routes to asia which was very beneficial because there was no other way to get to Asia at the time.

The gadsden purchase was a strip of territory along southern New Mexico and Arizona which was bought from Mexico in 1853. It is named for James Gadsden, ambassador of Mexico from 1853-56, who negotiated the treaty which included the terms of the purchase. The cost was $10,000,000 and also included the settlement of various claims by Mexico against the United States.

Alaaka was a chunk of land more than 1/5th the size of the U.S. at the time. It was a great purchase of land because it was away from all the borders and was not near the conflict.

The annexation of Hawaii damaged the U.S.' image as an intervener of International law. It wasn't very helpful although it did provide land for rich individuals who had the money to live there.
