The Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights are ratified, becoming the first reform in the American Constitution. This reform of the Constitution showed the rights of the American citizen. -
The House of Refuge in New York
The House of Refuge in New York is opened which is the first juvenile dentention center in the United State. This was an attempt to bring youth to reform rather than become criminals or spend their lives in prison. -
American Temperance Society
American Temperance Society is formed which advocated the prohibtion of acoholic beverages. This was the beginning of the social reform of Temperance. -
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson is inagruated as President. Jackson was reform the role of the President of the United States giving the position more use of its power. -
The Liberator
William Lloyd Garrison pushlishes the first issue of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator. This was a call for social reform in abolishing slavery, and The Liberator became a radical voice for the movement. -
Horace Mann
Horace Mann becomes the Secretary of the Board of Education in Massachusetts. He brough educational reform by bringing more government spending and attention to public education. -
Brook Farm
Brook Farm is built as one of the many Utopian societies of the 19th Century. The Utopian societies attempted to reform into Socialist communities, but all ultimately failed. -
Dorothea Dix
Dorothea Dix begins her touring of prisons and asylums. She would be disgusted by the conditions and become a major advocate for prison and aslyum reforms. -
Seneca Falls Convention
Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott help to organized one of the first woman's rights convention. This was a defining moment in the spread of the woman's rights social reform movement. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin. This novels helps give slaves a more human likeness to the American public which helps gain support for ablolitionist reforms. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment is passed abolishing slavery. This gave the ablolitionist reform movement sucess. -
American Federation of Labor
Samuel Gompers established the American Federation of Labor as one of the first major labor unions. Labor Unions attempt to reform working conditons and wages. -
Theodore Roosevelt
Teddy Roosevelt is elected into office marking the first of the 3 Progressive President. These presidents brought major government attention to reform movements during their time in office. -
The National Child Labor Committee
The National Child Labor Committee is established with the goal too abolish child labor in the United States. They have had some successful in their attempts at child labor reforms with child labor being severly limited in the United States. -
Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson is elected as 28th President of the United States. This marked the last of the Progressive President (the other two being Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft) who gave social reform major attention. -
18th Amendment
The 18th Amendment brings success to the Tempornace movement by prohibiting the sale of alcohol in the United State. This is a social reform is ratified in to be in the Constitution. -
19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment is passed giving woman the right to vote. This change in the Constitution ended the woman's suffrage reform movement with the women being sucessful. -
The 18tth Amendment is repealed
The 18th Amendment is repealed ending Prohibition. This ends the success of the Temporance social reform. -
The 26th Amendment
The 26th Amendment is ratified, prohibiting the denial of the right to vote for anyone 18 or older. This reforms the Constitution by protecting the right to vote. -
"Just Say No"
First Lady brings the term "Just Say No" to the public regarding drug use. This social reform tries to limit the drug use in the United States. -
Gay Rights
Vermont passes a law permitting same sex marriage in it. This marks a major success in the social reform for gay rights.
