Great Awakening
An unoganized but widespread movement of evanglical Christian sermons, and church meetings caused by church leaders fear of the colonist's decline in religious dedication. -
Period: to
French and Indian War
Intrest in the Ohio Valley caused the Britsh and the French to team up with indians and fight eachother. This allowed Benjamin Franklin to write the Albany Plan of Union which stated that the colonies would unite in times of crisis. Eventually the British won, gaining a lot of land. -
Treaty of Paris
The document that ended the French and Indian War. This enlarged the colonial territory all the way to the Mississippi River. and gave Spain New Orleans, and Florida -
proclamation of 1763
The document that allowed no more British settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists ignored it and settled west anyway. -
Sugar Act
The British needed to pay off the expenses from the French and Indian war so they taxed the colonists for items such as sugar and molasses. Colonists argued that it wasn't fair because they didn't have a representative in parliament. -
Stamp Act
When the colonists failed to find an alternative to the Sugar Act the British assigned a new tax called the Stamp Act. this required a tax on anything that required an official stamp or seal. Because of this the colonists created the Sons of Liberty who often used violence to frighten tax collectors. They also issued a declaration that claimed the act was a violation of their rights and they asked the British for a repeal. -
Townshend Acts
Still trying to pay off military expences, the British established the Townshend Acts. This placed a taxes on tea, paper, lead, paints, and glass. This caused large-scale boycotts of british goods. -
Boston Massacre
Bostonians saw British soldiers as a threat so fights and name-calling broke out. Eventually a mass murder of colonists by british soldiers began. -
Tea Act
The British East India Company wanted to sell tea cheap to help with debt. The tea tax from the Townshend Acts was kept to show that Parliament still had the right to tax the colonists. The company gained a monopoly because of the tea, and the colonists united to end the taxing. -
Boston Tea Party
When a new shipment of tea came in the Sons of Liberty ordered it to turn back although it didn't unload its cargo it stayed anchored for weeks. So, the Sons of Liberty dressed as indians and raided the ships and dumped a total of 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor. -
Intolerable Acts
The failed attempts to tax the colonists only angered the British. so the British placed four acts. The British shut down Boston Harbor until the colonists payed for all of the tea, they canceled the Boston charter, moved trials of royal colonial officials to Britain, and they required the colonists to house and supply British soldiers: they called this the quartering act. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
In the North of the Boston Harbor 1,500 British troops landed and were confronted, the colonists dealt a devastating blow to the officers of the British force. killing one-eighth and wounding one-sixth of all the officers in the war. -
Battle of Lexington/Concord
The battle that started the revolution. Still no one knows which side fired the first shot but it has been since named the" shot heard round the world" -
Common Sense
This was the first document to publicly ack for independence from the British. He used common english so te common person could easily understand it. -
Declaration of Independence
Perhaps the most important document in the history of this country. This stated that the colonies were spliting off from England and becoming a country. Also, this document stated all of the abuses performed by King George III. -
Battle of Saratoga
This Battle was the turning point of the war. the Americans captured eighty-six percent on the troops commanded by John Burgoyne. This was a very uplifting moment for the American troops. this also gave France the confidence to become allies of America. -
Battle of Yorktown
The French navy kept lord Cornwallis's troops out of Chesapeake Bay and therefore not allowing them to resupply. this forced him to surrender his 8,000 troops. and as a new parliament who was for the Americans was elected peace treaties began being made. The British finally started honoring America's independence.
