Louisiana Purchase
The United States purchased the Louisana Territory from France for $ 15 million dollars. This territory includes moder-day Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, most of Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and large parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, Texas and Louisiana. -
New Jersey abolishes slavery.
New Jersey became the last northern state to abolish slavery. -
Slave trade ended.
Thomas Jefferson signed a bill stating that slave trade was banned in Africa starting January 1st, 1808. -

Andrew Jackson purchased this piece of land from the Chickasaw Indians. It covers from the Mississippi River to the Ohio River and Tennesse River. -
Missouri Compromise
In an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, the Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Furthermore, with the exception of Missouri, this law prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36° 30´ latitude line -
Monroe Doctorine
The Monroe Doctrine was a US policy that was introduced on December 2, 1823, which stated that efforts by European countries to colonize land or otherwise interfere in the Americas would be viewed by the United States as acts of aggression. -
Mexican-American War began.
This dispute began over the annextion of Texas. Mexico considered Texas to be part of its terrioty even though the Texas Revolution occured years earlier. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
This treaty ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico ceded New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas and western Colorado for $15 million from the United States. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws. In 1849 California asked to become a free slave state which made north and south unbalenced. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, slave trade was abolished in Washington D.C, government was established in Utah and New Mexico, and the boundary was decided between Texas and New Mexico. California became a free slave state. -
Gadsen Purchase
James Gadsen bought land from Mexico. A strip from south of the Gila River and in southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona for $10 million dollars. -
Kansas- Newbraska Act
This nullified Missouri Compromise and allowed slavery in the territory north of the 36' 30' lattitude. -

South Carolina seceded from Union.
South Carolina was the first southern state to secede from the Union in 1860. -
Southern states followed South Carolina
Months after the succesion of South Carolina six other southern states followed. They were Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. Later Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Togther the formed the Confederate States of America. They elected Jefferson Davis as their President. -
Civil War begins.
The Civil War began in Charleston, South Carolina at a Union fort called Fort Sumter. The Union soldiers refused to leave this fort, so the Confederates fired cannons at the fort on April 12, l861. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves in the United States. -
13th Amendement passed
This abolished all slavery in the United States. -
Civil War ended
The Civil War eneded with the surrender of the Confederates. Both armies had roughly the same number of deaths except the south was destroyed.
