Justinian helped rebuild Constantinople, stop riots, lower taxes, systematizing Roman legal code and extended Roman architecture with addition of domes. This is significant because it helped stabilize Eastern Europe so it could flourish. This fits into theme 3 because it shows the manners in which the empire developed and grew of importance. This supports change because artisic culture and Roman structure was modified. -

Emporer Constantinople from the Roman Empire constructed a city full of elegant buildings, which the Byzantine Empire rebuilt the city and made it their capital. This is significant because this would be the center of Eastern Europe for this section of history. This fits into theme 3 because it shows state building by providing a base for a new civilization. This event supports continuity because the capital stayed the same throughout time. -

The Roman Pope excommunicated the patriarch and his followers because of issues between them. This is significant because it shows the divison between Eastern and Western Europe that developed. This fits into theme 3 because it shows conflict between the sides and how they split up and continued to grow in their own directions. This shows change because while Christianity stayed as the main religion, the principles differed between the types of Chrisitanity. -

Pope Urban II called for the first crusade, a war between Christians and Muslims, any people who died were promised full forgiveness of sins, they reached their goal but were later pushed back. This is significant because it shows the divison of Chrstianity and Islam. This fits theme 3 because it is conflict between Muslims and Christians and Muslims came out on top. This supports change because the political borders and the influence of Christians changed their culture. -

This is when architects started to use a gothic style of soaring church spires and tall arched windows. This is significant because it shows how Christianity started to influence culture. This fits theme 3 because it shows how the people are affected by expansion in which the buildings they live in. Decline in Western Europe; Hundred Years War and Black Death (Bubonic Plague)

This is when Western Europe started to decline, the Hundred Years War began and the Black Death killed many civilizians. This is significant because this is when the West begins to fall. This fits theme 3 because the conflict was the War and Black Death and both sides lost because both depleted resources. This supports change because physical borders changed and from the war the culture influenced others. -

Ottoman Empire catured Constantinople; End of Byzantine Empire
Islamic Turkish invaders pressure Byzantine on its eastern borders and eventually gave in. This is significant because Constantinoplr was finally invaded which meant the end of the Byzantine Empire. This fits into theme 3 because the Turkish and Eastern Euro's fought but the Turkish came out on top. This shows change because the whole political structure changes and Byzantine empire falls. -
Spread of new plows; use of horses in agriculture and transport

This is when many Europeans started to use many new agriculture techniques and tools. This is significant because it helped provide Western European people cruical gains so they could advance. This fits theme 5 because the tools and techniques were learned from Asian raiders and Western Europeans. This represents change because old techniques were dropped and new argiculture tools were used in their normal lives. -
Conversion of Russia to Christianity

Vladimir, King of Russia made the important desicion to have Orthodox Christianity as his empires main religion. This is significant because it shows how Christianity is growing throughout Europe. This fits into theme 5 because social structure developed from the government and how people accepted it. This shows change because while Vladimir did pick Christian religion, it is different from the main christian religion Catholicism which what it comes from.
