The Royal Proclamation, Indians deemed as soverign
In the royal proclamation, the King claimed land in North America, including land used by the Indians inhabiting this land. Further in the proclamation it says " He recognizes that the Indians are entitled to undisturbed possession of the lands reserved to them. ". This shows how the king wanted to form Canada on a peaceful path to unite the people of Canada. -
Lord Durhams report
Lord Durman recommended that french Canadiens should be rapidly assimilated into british culture in a cultural melting pot. -
The Manitoba Act
The Manitoba act created self determination for the metis people in the red river area. This connected the metis people to Canada and promoted their culture and way of life within Canada. -
Manitoba Schools question
Resulted in Section 22 of the Manitoba Act allowing for both Catholic and Protestant education in Manitoba after a long political battle. -
The Indian Act is first created
The Indian Act is the primary law used by the federal government to establish Indian status, the Treaty system and Indian reserves to divide Canada's culture and assimilate into the European culture. -
Chinese Head Tax
The Chinese Head Tax was implemented in 1885 by the Candian governemnt to limit chinese imigration to Canada. This was abolished in 1923. -
World War I conscription
During WW1 French and British Canadians have different views on conscription where the French still had loyalty to France and did not want to fight under British rule. This created a divide between the ethnicities as fighting as a Canadian was not an option. -
Canada officially becomes bilingual
When Canada officially promoted bilingualism, french speaking quebecoius felt a tighter bond with the rest of Canada instead of being a separate entity as they were formally recognized and prioritized to create a more diverse Canadian identity. -
The White Paper on Aboriginal Rights
The White Paper on Aboriginal Rights was an attempt to abolish prior legislation like the Indian Act and the treaties to assimilate all Indian people under the Canadian nation state and remove their personal cultural identity. -
Canada adopts official multiculturalism
By official adopting multiculturalism, Canada promotes its rich ethnic and cultural history and allows for the celebration of many cultures under one Canadian identity, further connecting Canadians. -
Bill 101
Bill 101 changed the official language in Quebec to french as it is considered the "normal everyday" language in Quebec, this further separates Quebec from Canadian identity. -

Quebec refuses to sign the constitution
Quebec refused to sign the new constitution created by prime minister Trudeau. Quebec did not want to be involved in Canada when they felt like the distant society, this created tension and some say led to the Quebec referendum. -
The Canada Act
The Canada Act of 1982 created Canada as a completely sovereign nation state, separate from Britain. This allowed Canadians to be connected as Canadians not as British subjects and further solidified Canada's identity. -

Canada adopts a multiculturalism act to recognize and preserve the multicultural heritage of Canada and it's cultural groups. -
RCMP allows wearing of turbans- Reasonable accomidation.
Court ruling allows for sikh memebers to include their turban in the RCMP uniform to comply with their religion and is an example of reasonable accomidation in Canada. -
The Oka Crisis
Also known as the Kanesatake resistance, the Oka crisis was a land dispute between the local Mohawk tribe and land developers where a golf course was planned to be built on traditional burial and ceremonial grounds. After non peaceful protesting (Rioting) by the local band, the development was suspended and the land was later official recognized as Mohawk land. -
Second Quebec referendum
Quebec had a referendum deciding if they should become a separate sovereign nation to Canada as they felt they were foreigners in their own nation and did not fit the Canadian identity. -
Creation of Nunavut
Nunavut was created as an official homeland for the Inuit people giving them official power in Canada's government and united them together to Canada. -
Quebec is a nation within a nation state
Prime minister Harper announced that Quebec's culture made them a nation within a nation state and acknowledged them as a separate culture in Canada's tapestry of cultures. -
Canada apologizes for Residential Schools
Stephen Harper, the prime minister formally apologized for the assimilation legislation of the Canadian government especially with the residential school system where First nations people were forcefully assimilated into white culture. This formal statement encouraged the reconciliation of Canadian people and the diversity of Canada's identity.
