Anthracite Coal Strike
In 1902, coal minners in Pennsylvania went on strike asking for higher wages and shorter days. The minners also asked for their union to be recognized. -

The department was a part of the president's cabinet and it was concerned with controlling the excesses of big business. -
Elkins Act
The act authorized the Interstate Commerce Commission to impose heavy fines on railroads that offered rebates. -
Northern Securities Antitrust
Took down the monoplies that Great Northern and Pacific Northern railroad companies held. -
Ida Tarbell
Ida Tarbell wrote a collective of investigative articles that helped to take down the monoply that was the Standard Oil Company. -
Robert La Follette
A U.S. Senator from Wisconsin that called for progressive reforms. -
The Jungle
THe book was writtwn by Upton Sinclair to expose the harsh and unsanitary conditions of the meat packaging industry. -
Pure Food and Drug Act
The act outlawed the manufactre, sale, or transportation of misbranded or poisonous product such as: food, drugs, liquor, and medicines. -
Meat Inspection Act
Protects against the sale of misbranded meat in public industries. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
A fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory and due to fire code violations (locked doors, etc.) nearly 150 workers were stuck and died. -
17th amendment
Senators were now voted for directly by the public instead of by other Senators from the state. -
Progressive (Bull Moose) Party
Theodore Roosevelt formed and ran for president for a third term under this party. He wanted to fix everything Taft had done, which he had disapproved of. -
Underwood Tariff
After the 16th amendment was ratified, this act reimposed the federal income tax and lowered basic tariff rates. -
Federal Reserve Act
Established a federal, central banking system that had the authority to issue the official U.S. currency (dollars). -
Federal Trade Commission
Promotes consumer protection and eliminates anticompetaiive business practices. -
Clayton Antitrust Act
The act was passed to clarify and add o the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. -
Margaret Sanger
Sanger opened the first U.S. family planning and birth control clinic. She would then be arrested many times and would go on to found the American Birth Control League. -
Keating-Owen Child Labor Act
The act made it unlawful to sell in interstate commerce any product that came from a factory employing 14 year olds or younger. -
Eugene V. Debs
Debs made a speech urging people to resist the draft. He was later arrested and found quilty under the Espionage Act -
18th Amendment
Declared the production, transportation, and sale of alcohol illegal. -
John Dewey
He helped found the progressive New School for Social Research. -
Women's Christian Temperance Union
The union's membership peaked during the 20's. It was the first mass organization of women calling for social reform. -
19th amendment
This amendment granted women the right to vote.
