  • Free soil party

    This party consisted of people who were opposed to Slavery spreading to Western territories. This is an example of crisis because people are beginning to disagree with one another.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    This law allowed southerners who had slaves that flee'd to the north to be allowed to come and collect them. It also made that Slave's who flee'd to the northern free states could not be considered free. This is an example of conflict because now abolitionist northerners cannot help free slaves from the south and this angers them and makes them want to take action.
  • Dred Scott Case

    A slave was brought to the North by his master and the slave tried to take his master to court, but he was still lawfully a slave whether he was in a free state or not so he was denied a trial. This outraged the North and is an example of crisis because this made the North question the governments ability to hold to the constitution.
  • Harpers Ferry

    John Brown lead a raid on a southern arsenal in an attempt to arm slaves for a riot. This is an example of conflict because it was a northerner who actively tried to make a violent uprising in the south.
  • Secession

    The southern states began to secede from the Union once Lincoln was elected president due to the fear that he would take away slavery. This is an example of a crisis because the Union was beginning to fall apart
  • Election of 1860

    This was when Lincoln ran for president. This is an example of Crisis because the south believed if Lincoln was elected that he would outlaw slavery, so they began to panic and secede from the Union.
  • Fort Sumter

    The start of the civil war, where the Confederate states fired upon Fort Sumter which was held by the Union and the Union troops ended up surrendering. This is an example of war because this is the battle that sparked the violence for the civil war.
  • Anaconda Plan

    This was a strategy from the North that planned to suppress the south by, like an anaconda, constricting them so they could not move and the troops could move in and wipe them out. This is an example of war because this was a very aggressive war tactic.
  • Writ of Habeas Corpus

    Lincoln suspended the right for anyone to be eligible for a court case in defense of themselves during the civil war so Southern sympathizers could not sway the North in favor of the south. This is an example of conflict because it was an extremely controversial bill that restricted a main constitutional right.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Abraham stated that for all states, slavery was not to be tolerated and all slaves were from here on considered free. This was an example of crisis because this angered the south because it made them powerless to be able to keep their slaves.
  • Battle of gettysburg

    This was a major turning point in the war in the North's favor. This is an example of war because thousands of people died, but the North ended up prevailing and was able to begin to make a stronger push into the south after dealing such a devastating blow.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Lincoln made a speech honoring those who died in the battle of Gettysburg, and encouraging everyone to finally put an end to this war. This is an example of leadership because Lincoln decided to motivate all of his troops and supporters by showing them what these brave men had done to fight for equality.
  • Election of 1864

    Lincoln ran for re election against McClellan. This is an example of crisis because McClellan was a southern supporter who could've ruined the North's fight if he had won.
  • 13th Amendment

    This law outlawed slavery in every state. This is an example of leadership because our leaders finally put their foot down and said they would not tolerate it anymore.
  • Black Codes

    These laws restricted African American's freedoms after the Civil war, and forced them to work for low wages. This is an example of conflict because this angered abolitionists even more because they felt like they fought for nothing.
  • 14th amendment

    This was a law passed that stated anyone born within the United States was therefore a US Citizen and had every right every other US citizen did. This is an example of leadership because this was a huge step towards equality for everyone.
  • 15th Amendment

    This law allowed anyone to vote regardless of their race or previous history of slavery. This is an example of leadership because this is one more step towards the end of racism.
  • Compromise of 1877

    This compromise finally pulled all their troops out of the South and ended the reconstruction Era. This is an example of leadership because now the North and the South are beginning to work together again.
  • Jim Crow Laws

    This forced the segregation of colored and white people. It was under the clause of everyone being "Separate but equal". This was an example of conflict because it still was not equality, equality would have been everyone being allowed to be together.
  • Plessy Vs Ferguson

    This case was an outrage because it showed that even after all they fought for, racism was still around and still present in day to day lives. This is an example of conflict because this angered people because they believed this was unconstitutional.
