    linkThe election of 1860 was particularly brutal because who you voted on depended upon where you stood on the issue of slavery. Lincoln won the election with 40% of the popular vote and 180 of the electoral vote. 60% of Amercia voted for someone else. Just weeks after the election, South Carolina seperated itself from the Union.

After a series of notes between the two leaders, they agreed to meet, at the house of Wilmer McLean in the village of Appomattox Courthouse. The meeting lasted approximately two and one-half hours and at its conclusion the bloodliest conflict in the nation's history neared its end.
