Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was a section of the group of laws known as the "Compromise of 1850." California became a free state during this time. These laws continued the use of the Underground Railroad.

Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Ten years later, Abraham Lincoln said "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." upon meeting her. Her book swept the nation and effected people in many different ways. Her book was about slavery and sold 300,000 copies just in the North.

The Kansas Nebraska Act was passed by US Congress. It allowed Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide whether or not to allow slavery in their borders.

Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was the election in which Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He was a republican who defeated two democrats and one Constitutional Union candidate. Abraham Lincoln was the one to abolish slavery.

Battle of Fort Sumter
The Battle of Fort Sumter lasted three days. Robert Anderson and his 85 soldiers positioned at St. Moultrie. They started fire at 4:30 am and shooting lasted 34 hours. This was the beginning of the Civil War.

The Battle of Shiloh took place when 40,000 confederate soldiers, who were currently under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston, came out of the woods and attacked a line of Union soldiers occupying ground along the Tennessee River near Pittsburgh Landing.

Surrender at Appomattox
This attack started before 8:00 in the morning. About 9,000 men hid in the fields west of the village before sunrise and waited. Lee's army surrendering was not the end but it set North Virginia's stage for it's conclusion.
