    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Bosnia by a member of the black hand on June 28th, 1914. His driver, Leopold, took a wrong turn to a bar. In that bar was someone who earlier tried to kill him by throwing a bomb at him but failed. He took his second chance when the Archduke showed up at the bar he was at and shot him in his car. This was the spark to WW1.

    Battle of Tannenberg
    The battle of Tannenberg was fought in East Prussia, now where Stębark, Poland is. It ended in Russias defeat, giving Germany the win. Germany had 13,000 people killed or wounded but left Russia with over 30,000. 92,000 Russians were taken as prisoners.

    The British and French army worked fought together against the German army in the western front. It was an allied victory, but they didn't get much of an advantage because right after this battle was when trench warfare started to settle.

    The Christmas truce took place on Christmas 1914. It was an unofficial declaration to stop fighting on that day only. It is still unclear how it began, but the Germans and British army were playing games of soccer, set up a Christmas tree, and even sang together. The next day they went right back to fighting.

    The battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of the first world war. it ended with 6,000 British casualties and 2,500 Germans died. The battle had an undecided victory but both sides declared victory.

    Te battle of the Somme was one of the bloodiest in American history, and one of the biggest in WW1. The battle ended on November 18th 1916 with over 300,000 deaths.

    Zimmerman Telegram
    The zimmerman telegram was a secret message sent from Germany to Mexico to try and get them into the war. They tried to make a deal stating they would help bring back Texas, New Mexico, and other states to Mexico if they joined. Mexico declines, and the USA found out about the telegram. This was their last straw and they were willing to declare war.

    When America formally declared war, president Woodrow Wilson ended the USA's neutral stance and signed the joint resolution. They declared war on Germany but just ended up taking place in the World War.

    The Treaty of Versailles was the formal ending of WW1. Germany took blame for all damages they did, and were in debt over 6.6mil. They were also forced to lose their territory, and disarm. their army shrunk greatly and some believe that is one main reason for WW2.
