Global, Manhattan project begins
The Manhattan project was a project to create the famous atomic bomb. Albert Einstein sent a letter to Dr. Roosevelt explaining the project and became a great success after that.It is important to history because it was created near the time of WW2 (WW2history) . It was active through 1942-1946. This invention had changed history for the better or worse argueably because it gave the US a brand new weapon to work with while they defeated the Germans. This saved the lives of many Jews as well. -
Personal, Partition of Pakistan and India
This is the day when one country wa divided into two. This is also the day when Pakistan was established as it's own country. I was born in Pakistan and grew up there for 2 years until I moved to Canada. This event is very important to me and to history because it is my homecountry and the partition changed everything because it was based of religon. It greatly changed everyone's life as mostly all Muslims living in India moved to Pakistan and mostly all Hindus remained in India. -
Personal, Quaid-E-Azam passes away
Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid-e-Azam) was a lawyer, politcian, and the founder of Pakistan. He died at the age of 71 (Paknews). This is important to my family because my family and many other Pakistanis were depressed at this time because he is argueably the most important individual in Pakistan's short history. His birthday is also a National holiday in the rememberance of him. There is also tons of monuments named after him in Pakistan. There is also at statue at York university for him. -
Canada, Newfoundland joins Canada
Shortly after ww2, a vote took place which ended up making Newfoundland a province in Canada. It was previously called the indpendent Dominion of Newfoundland before it joined Canada. The votes were 52% to 48% causing Canada to win Newfoundland.This is important to Canadian history because this event gave Canada another province, Canada had made the choice of taking NFLD in as part of their country. This concluded the making of Canada as a country with a total of 10 provinces and 3 territories. -
Global, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is formed
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was formed for collective security of many of the countries involved. It consisted of 12 of countries including Canada when first set up.It is important to Canada and history because Canada was involved giving Canada protection if it was every at war with any country not in NATO (Nato). The Warsaw Pact was created as a response of defence from the Soviet Union. Due to NATO, Canada stayed protected throughout 1945-1982. -
Canada, United Nation adapt Lester B. Pearson's Suez peacekeeping plan
On this date, the UN passed the peacekeeping plan of Lester B. Pearson. Due to the Suez Canal crisis, Pearson came up with a plan to create the United Nation Emergency Force (UNEF). This is significant to Canada and history because it helped end the conflict of the Suez canal between Eygpt, Brtian, France, and Italy and it also helped create the image for Canada as a peacekeeping nation (Spotlight Canada). Pearson also recieved a noble peace prize for his efforts and ideology. -
Canada, Natives win the right to vote in Canada
The federal government removed the restrictions placed on aboriginal peoples with respect to the vote. Beginning in 1960, aboriginal Canadians were no longer required to give up their treaty rights and renounce their status under the Indian Act in order to qualify for the vote. It is so important to Canadian history because there had never been a time when every age eligible Canadian could vote. There have always Canadian citizens that were excluded from the democratic process until 1960. -
Global, Cuban missle crisis
The crisis was between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. Cuba and Russia were in a communist alliance type deal and the soviets had missiles in Cuba, which could rain destruction on the US from that close. This is important to history because the US was worried about attacks and had to take certain measures to secure their security. The measures that took place created tension between Cuba and the US. These tensions still last today. -
Global, John F. Kennedy was assasinated
The 35th president of the United States of America was assassinated. He was shot to death while travelling in an open car in Dallas Texas. There are many theories as to why he was shot, yet none of them have been confirmed (jfklibrary). This is an important event that took place in history because a president of the USA was killed. It is also important because at the time JFK was such a significant figure in the world as he was the leader of the world’s biggest superpower. -
Personal, Indo-Pak war over Kashmir
The second Indo-Pakistani conflict (1965) was also fought over Kashmir and started without a formal declaration of war. The war began in August 5, 1965. The initial battles between India and Pakistan were contained within Kashmir. It is important to history because it is the strat of the Kashmir conflict between Pakistan and India that still lasts today because each sides refuses to give leverage to the other and both sides want the beautiful land of Kashmir that resides between Pakistan/India. -
Canada, FLQ October crisis
Many supporters of the separatim in Quebec we're very disappointed of the electorial result to not seperate Quebec from Canada. Some of the supporters created the FLQ terrorist group. On October 5th, the group kidnapped two politians and gave the government a ransom. This is significant to Canada and to history because it lead to the war measures act being implemented and 453 people were arrested over 3 weeks in connection. -
Personal, Pakistan-Bangladesh liberation war begins
This war broke out when the Pakistani Army launched a military operation called Operation Searchlight. India latered joined the war and joined alliances with Bangladesh (Dripireland). Bangladesh won its independence and seperated from Pakistan. This is a very important event to my family and to history because a small portion of Pakistan was liberated (Bangladesh) and it ended another religon conflict between Hindus wanting to live alone in Bangadesh and Muslims in Pakistan. -
Personal, Earthquake in Pakistan
This was a major earthquake that took place in Pakistan. About 5,300 people died and 17,000 got injured. This is very important to my family because my family because both my parents were living in Pakistan at the time. It didn't affect the city lived in directly but it did cause destruction throughout the cities around it. Pakistan has had many earthquakes but this one was quite major and there were many casualties. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 -
Global, Vietnam war ends
The war that took place in Vietnam about 14 years after WW2 ended. The US was involved and it was due to the attempt of ending communism (USgov). This is an important event in history because it was a failure attempt made my the US to end communism and it caused many casualties for no reason. Many Americans have marked this day as "benchmark for what not to do in all future U.S. foreign conflicts" (J. Rosenberg). -
Canada, Canadian charter of rights and freedom is created
This was the day when the Charter of Rights and Freedom took place in Canada. This was a a bill of rights that was made during the Constitution Act (Canadahistory). It is important in Canadian history because due to this Charter, many laws were created which gave Canadians a lot of rights. Due to these laws, many Canadians have the basic human freedom rights that everyone should have and the charter continues to be significant even in the modern day.
