North Vietnam (Communist)
Since North Vietnamese communists were spreading to South Vietnam, its been called the "Domino Theory." America did not like the idea of communism spreading, therefore, it escalated. -
Napalm
The Viet-cong fought in many ways, like hiding in the vegetation while fighting. Because of this, Americans used napalm, which incinerated entire forests. This may have been an effective way, but there were also civilian casualties. -
Gulf of Tonkin Incident
On August second, a U.S. ship report that supposedly they were attacked by North Vietnamese, but this is not completely true. On August fourth however, they were attacked by the North Vietnamese. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
LBJ soon heard of this incident and took action. He proposed and signed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. -
Search and Destroy Missions
In search and destroy missions, American troops would seek out Viet-cong presence in villages. Troops would seek out the Viet-cong and take them out and then they would withdraw after. This raised escalation due to civilian casualties in villages. -
Body Counts
Due to the Viet-cong hiding among the vegetation, the U.S. resulted in using body counts. This also raised escalation due to retaliation of civilians. -
Attack on Pleiku Air Base
Viet-cong launched their second attack on Pleiku air base. This attack was mainly directed to Camp Holloway but American troops soon retaliated. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Due to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and the recent attack on a military base "Pleiku", LBJ ordered bombing runs in North Vietnam. This was a strategy that was supposed to strike back at the Viet-cong and scare them. -
Arrival of U.S. Troops
On this date, American troops started to arrive in South Vietnam. It raised escalation because now the Vietcong were dealing with U.S. infantry. -
American Support For Vietnam War
In America, many people did not agree with the ideals of the Vietnam War. While some were on the fence, most started to question if this is even are war.
