The act of one nation expanding into another territory. Taking over another nation to further expand. We see examples with Europe colonizing Africa and the Americas, -
Missionaries
A person who goes to another nation to spread and convert others to Christianity. -
Assimilation
Process of one group/culture adjusting to a more dominant group.
ex: Immigrants adjusting to an American lifestyle -
Industrialization
A period where technology started to advance rapidly and began to be integrated in everyday life. -
Great Plains
Broad area of land in the U.S. Flat land, stretched all across mid-western U.S. Covered in prairies, steppe, and grasslands.
Many settlers would travel across and settle on the Great Plains. -
Monroe Doctrine
The U.S stated they were opposed to the colonialism of Europe in the Americas. -
Homesteader
To be a homesteader means to be self sufficient. Typically relates to subsistence farming. Basically living off the land with only yourself. -
Homestead Act of 1862
Several laws passed by the U.S. in which settlers could acquire some land. -
Civil War Ammendments
13th- Abolishment of slavery
14th- Addresses the rights of former slaves
15th- Allowed former slaves/people of color to vote -
Transcontinental Railroad
Connected the east and west coast using railroads. Was almost 2,000 miles long. Construction started 1863. -
Immigration
The act of an individual or group moving to another country in which they do not originally come from or posses legal citizenship.
We see the first example in North America with the pilgrims in the 1600's. Although the most immense wave of immigration began much later. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
United States law that prohibited Chinese immigrants from working. Passed by president Chester A. Arthur. -
"Closing of the Western Frontier"
The end of unexplored/unsettled land. -
Alfred T. Mahan
United States Naval officer. Was known for his strategic mind. Served for 40 years -
Klondike Gold Rush
Migration of over 100,000 prospectors in the Yukon area in Alaska. Cities like Dawson city were established and the Yukon territory. -
Yellow Journalism
Journalism that relies heavily on over exaggerating. Contained very little to no facts about the matter at hand and relies on stretched conclusions. -
Acquisitions
Something gained by an individual or group.
America acquired Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. -
Naval Station
Where naval ships stay when they are not stationed anywhere. A military port for naval ships to rest or stock up. -
Spanish-American War
Conflict between Spain and America. Started with Spain sinking a battleship off the Maine coast earlier that year. -
Rural and Urban
Rural- Farm land/country side
Urban- Cities, associated with technology
People began to move to the city to look for jobs. -
Henry Cabot Lodge
An American Republican in Massachusetts. Received a PhD from Harvard University. Known for his opposition of the Treaty of Versailles. -
Sanford B. Dole
Was a lawyer and jurist in Hawaii. Advocated the westernization of Hawaii. Became Hawaii's first governor. -
Teddy Roosevelt
First served as governor of New York. At the time became the youngest president at age 42. Won again in 1904 -
Americanization
The influence of American culture, media, cuisine in other countries. -
Urbanization
Process of an area becoming more urban.
