Christopher Columbus thought he reached the East Indies, but instead he found an island in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador or "Holy Savior." The people of San Salvador were the Taino. -

First Enslaved Africans Arrive in the Americas
Europeans recognized the advantages of having Africans work in the Americas. The Africans were exposed to European diseases so they had immunity, they knew how to farm, and they were unlikely to escape. The buying of the slaves was known as the Atlantic Slave Trade. Over 300,000 Africans were transported to the Americas. -

Cortes Conqueres the Aztec Empire
The Spanish fought back after the Aztecs rebelled against them. In their fight back, Cortes and his men conquered the Aztecs. The spanish had supreme weaponry over the Aztecs and Cortes got a native woman translator named Malinche to join his side in the fight. -

Pizarro Conqueres Incan Empire
Pizarro and his army met Atahualpa in Cajamara. Atahualpa brought a forces of 30,000 men to the meeting and the Spanish destroyed the Incan force and kidnapped Atahualpa. Atahualpa gave the Spanish the option of him filling the room up with gold and silver twice, for his realease. But, the Spanish strangled Atahualpa. The Incan's left Cajamarca, and then Pizarro and his force claimed Cuzco, the Incan capital in 1533. -
English found Jamestown
In 1606, London investors received a charter to find a colony in North Amreica from King James. In 1606, the company's three ships, and about 100 settlers made an English harbor. In 1607, they reached the coast of Virginia, and they claimed it as thier land and called in Jamestown in honor of their king. Jamestown was England's first permanent settlement in North America. Tabacco was a profitable cash crop in Jamestown. -
English found Plymouth
A group called the Pilgrims founded a second English colony in Plymouth, Massachussetts. The Pilgrims wanted religious freedom because they were persecuted in England for their beliefs. -
French and Indian War Ends
In 1754, a dispute over land claims in the Ohio Valley caused a war between the French and the British on the North American continent. This was known as the French and Indian War. The British army helped the British colonisits and defeated the French in 1763. Because of the defeat, the British took control of the eastern half of North America
