Mexican-American war
The Mexican-American war for the most part took place in and around Texas from 1846-1848.
The feud between Mexico and the United States. began when the United States annexed Texas. This was a problem because Mexico considered Texas as it's own territory which lead to the disputes over the boundary line. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal prohibiting slavery in any territories that were acquired by the U.S. from Mexico after the Mexican- American war. This was introduced by representative David Wilmot of Pennsylvanian which lead to a series of events that contributed to the civil war.The wilmot Proviso led to the forming of the republican party in 1854 which was supported by wilmot Proviso. -
Compromise of 1850
A set of 5 laws passed by the U.S. Congress that aimed to resolve tensions over slavery in newly acquired territories following the Mexican-American war. During the compromise of 1850 California was admitted to the union as a free state and would decide on slavery over popular voting. -
Fugitive slave act
The fugitive slave act was an act passed that required slaves to be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. The act also made the federal government responsible for finding and returning slaves who escaped. -
