United Nations Established
The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945. Intergovernmental organization formed to bring nations into dialogue in hopes of preventing further world wars. Thus, it guaranteed veto power to all permanent members of its Security Council—Britain, China, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States.Still around today to create and maintain order in the world. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was America's universal pledge of support for any people fighting any communist or communist-inspired threat. Presented to Congress on March 12 of 1947 in support of a request for $400 million to defend Greece and Turkey against Soviet-backed insurgencies. The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy whose purpose was to stop Soviet expansion during the Cold War. -
Brown v. Board of Education
Brown vs. Board of Education is such an important Supreme court case that has affected how schools and other public facilities operate in the United States.The Supreme Court overthrew the old Plessy v. Ferguson principle that black public facilities could be "separate but equal". This allowed for public schools to be desegregated. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 16- 28 of 1962 was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was the moment when both superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict. It was a political and military standoff between the U.S. and Soviet Union because the Soviet Union installed nuclear armed missiles on Cuba. The U.S. agreed to Soviet Khrushchev’s offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
In 1964, this act outlawed segregation of public accommodations. It also established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce the law, it made the federal government responsible for finding instances of discrimination, and it made illegal discrimination based on race, religion, ethnic origin, or gender. Unfortunately, the act did not effectively address many problems associated with voting rights. -
Apollo 11
U.S. Astronauts Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first human to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. This was a great achievement because America beat the Soviet Union to the Moon.
