Nixon announces that he will appoint Ford to become his next VP. This was the first time that a VP was appointed by use of the 25th amendment. -

He was sworn in after the house and the senate both voted majority to bring him in as vice president. -

Nixon resigns after the Watergate events occured. -
Ford is sworn in as president
After the resignation of Nixon the 25th amendment was in place again meaning that Ford became president by default from Nixon resigning since he was the VP. -
Ford pardoned Nixon
Ford pardons Nixon because he wanted to put the scandal behind the nation and focus on the issues at hand(controversial). Ford was seen as a failure because he was unable to stop inflation and didn't hold Nixon accountable.
