  • French and Indian War

    A fight between France and Britain over control of North America that led to British dominance, but also made the colonists angry
  • Proclamation Line of 1763

    The British drew a line along the Appalachian Mountains keeping colonists from settling west to prevent conflicts with Native Americans.
  • Stamp Act

    Britain taxed colonists on paper document. Colonists weren't happy and protested against it.
  • Declaratory Act

    Britain said they had the right to make laws for colonies. This occurred after the Stamp Act.
  • Tea Act

    Britain let a company sell cheap tea but with a tax. Colonists rejected it because they saw it as a violation of their rights
  • Boston Tea Party

    Colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor in response to the Tea Act.
  • Declaration of Independence

    A document declaring that the colonies were free from British rule
  • Northwest Ordinance of 1787

    A law that explained how new states could be admitted into the United States and ban slavery in the Northwest
  • Articles of Confederation

    First written confederation of the United States.
  • Treaty of Paris

    A treaty that ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized the U.S as and independent country.
  • Constitutional Convention

    A meeting where delegates discussed a new plan for the American government which became the U.S constitution
  • Ratification of the U.S. Constitution

    The states officially approving the new U.S. Constitution
  • Louisiana Purchase

    When the United States brought a large amount of land from France, making the country bigger.

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Law that allowed people of Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether to allow slavery, which lead to violence

    Presidential election that led to Abraham Lincoln becoming president and increased tensions between the North and South
