The Missouri compromise
Bill that aimed to settle the argument over slavery by separating the country on latitude 36º 30', North of the line will not have slavery and south of the line will have slavery. The 1820 Compromise was established because when the US acquired the new territory, people were divided between the new territory being a slave state or a free state. the Missouri compromise expanded the sectional division of the American people with one side wanting slaves and the other wanting to free the slaves. -
Wilmot Proviso
It was a suggested amendment meant to tackle the disputes over whether or not the newly acquired land from Mexico would be free or a slave state. The proviso was never pass in the Senate. This provision increased the sectional division on slavery. -

The Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay solution to the expansion of slavery. California admitted as a free state, New Mexico and Utah would be established form the land that was taken from Mexico, the slave trade in Washington would be abolished, and the fugitive slave act. -
The Fugitive Slave Act
Stricter then the 1793 FSA. If a slave is claimed to be a fugitive, then they will get arrested, Fugitive slave cannot ask for a trail, and officials who fail to arrest a fugitive will be fined $1000. The 1850 FSA caused outraged from the north because it was stripping away the norths right to be a free state. under the Missouri compromise. -

Bleeding of Kansas
After the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed a series of violence occurred between pro-slavery and Anit-slavery forces. The violence was so intense not only did sectional divisions between the north and the south increased, but many also died during the 4 years. -
Dred-Scott Decision
The case was about a slave who was in the free state of Illinois, after his owner died, moved to Missouri. Scott claimed that Illinois had freed him and he was no longer a slave. The court ruled that: an African American is not a citizen, slave-owners can take their slave anywhere they would like in America, and congress couldn't restrict the rights given by the constitution. The decision was seen as the growth of "slave power" in the US. -

John Brown planned to take control of a federal Arsenal and arm enslave people and overthrow the "slave power. The raid was unsuccessful. In the south it showed how strong slaver was but in the North, brown became a martyred hero. -

Abraham Lincoln won with all the norths votes. The south was split. Lincoln victory provoked outrage from the south adding more reasons for the south to want to succeed. -

Formation of the Conference
First South Carolina Secedes on December 20, 1860. After more Southern Sates Seceded except Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. The states that left the union came together to create the Conference. -
Battle at Fort Sumtner
A Federal fort that was in South Carolinas waters held federal soldiers. The Union wanted to send supplies to help the federal soldiers, but it was attacked by the confederates. This was the start of the of the civil war.
