  • Haymarket Riot

    Haymarket Riot
    This Riot started when someone threw a bomb at police. 8 people died that day and the people were fighting for the rights for a 8 hour work day. The people believed that the capitalist system should be stopped because it exploited workers.
  • Great Southwest Railroad Strike

    Great Southwest Railroad Strike
    The Railroad were popping in the late 1800's. This went though 5 different states. The workers refused to work because of unsafe conditions, and with the unfair hours with the pay. This happened from the lack of commitment from other railroads. This striked failed
  • Homestead Strike

    Homestead Strike
    One of the hottest new companies (Carnegie Steel) against the strongest union (Amalgamated Association) went a riot. By 1889 Andrew wanted to break the union. The manager "Frick" put more demand on the workers and that caused Frick to start locking out the workers of the plant. Many strikers got arrested and it ended. The Carnegie Steel won and pushed for longer hours for less pay.

    Railway Labor Act
    The Railway Labor Act wanted to dodge any interruption to commerce. They also wanted to make sure an unhindered right of workers to join a labor union. It relates to the unions because it was a group of people wanting better labor/management.
  • Norris- LaGuardia Act

    Norris- LaGuardia Act
    Outlawed yellow-dog contracts which means it neglect workers to not join a union. Made sure the use of court injunctions in labor like strikes and boycotts. This act wanted a more even playing field between the judiciary and the nation labor relations system.

    Jesse Owens Winning Gold
    In Berlin Olympics, the first ever black man won a gold medal in track. This was a huge event to everyone in the world. This pushed more color people so start training which is a union because its a group of people wanting one thing in mind. Jesse was a big role model.
  • Fair Labor Standard Act

    Fair Labor Standard Act
    This was the first federal minimum wage act restricting child labor, overtime pay, recordkeeping and kid working full or part time jobs. This affected people in the private sector, federal, state and local governments. It make a minimum on how much you can pay someone for work. Everyone in the Union wanted a minimum on how much they can get payed for their work.
  • UPS workers strike

    UPS workers strike
    185,000 UPS workers went on strike because they want full time jobs instead of part time jobs. They also wanted increase in wages and multiemployer pension plan. In result to this, UPS lost over 600 million during this time. The union came together because they all wanted more for their work and not only one person can make a difference.

    9/11
    On September 11th in 2001, planes went into the twin towers to destroy them and kill hundreds. It was a terrorist attack on the U.S. and everyone came together as a union to work together to get everyone back on their feet. The union helped they people that lost everything.

    World War 2 was pretty strong on unions. During this time it brought more jobs, growing wages, and more union memberships. During WWII there was no public employee unions but there was unions that worked with private companies
