Chapter 1: event 1:
Missy Hensen tells Old John that they are leaving the plantation as her husband Jeb is ill and a slave trader would be coming to buy the slaves on the Hensen plantation -
Chapter 1: Event 2:
Mammmy Sally informs Julilly about the country Canada somewhere in ther north where there is no slavery -
Chapter 2: Event 1:
jeb and Missy Hensen leave their plantation. -
Chapter 2: Event 2:
The cruel slave driver arrives at the Hensen plantation and chooses to buy young children including Julilly and Willie and herds them in a wagon. -
Chapter 2: Event 3:
Mammy Sally and Julilly are separated. -
Chapter 3: Event 1:
Throughout the day, the wagon carrying Julilly and the children rolls on. They have to bear the heat of summer and they long for water to quench their thirst. Near a waterfall, they meet a kind white man and a nigger boy who is free. The White man is a Quaker Abolitionist and Julilly connetcts him to Canada as he has freed his slave. -
Chapter 4: Event 1:
Julilly for the first time loses her fear and shows great courage in helping the 3 male slaves Lester, Ben and Adamwade through the swamp -
Chapter 5: Event 1:
The slave wagon reaches the Riley Plantation -
Chapter 5: Event 2:
Julilly is separated from the children and kept in a shack with some slave girls. She meets Liza -
Chapter 6: Event 1:
Julilly discovers that life on Riley plantation is miserable for the slaves. -
Chapter 6: Event 2:
Julilly and the crippled Liza become friends. Work throughout the day picking cottonon the plantation with Sims - the overseer - whipping the slow workers. -
Chapter 7: Event 1:
Mr Alexander Ross, orthinologist from Canada, visits the Riley Plantation. -
Chapter 7: Event 2:
Julilly is whipped by Sims for trying to listen to the conversation between the overseer and the Canadian. Ross saves her from a second lash by holding Sims hand and walking away. -
Chapter 8: Event 1:
Liza informs Julilly about her plan to escape to Canada by following the north star. Julilly decides to accompany her -
Chapter 9: Event 1:
Lester informs Julilly that Mr Ross had actually come to the plantation to help some slaves to escape to canada -
Chapter 9: Event 2:
At night Julilly and Liza attend a meeting with Mr Ross, Ben, Lester and Adam. Mr Ross tells them of his plan for escape -
Chapter 10: Event 1:
The four negro slaves start off on their way to freedom with instructions from Mr Ross. They wade through the marshes so that the blood hounds might loose their scent. -
Chapter 10: Event 2:
They travel by night following the Mississippi River and sleep during the day. Julilly and Liza dress as boys and cut their hair short. -
Chapter 10: Event 3:
Sim follows the escaping slaves with blood hounds. -
Chapter 10: Event 4:
The four avoid the blood hounds by crossing a stream.
